Mrs. Smith and Mrs. McGregor’s fourth grade classes learned the process of turning an unattractive planter into a beautiful planter through the process of mosaic. Using broken tiles, sea glass, glass pebbles and rocks, the classes first glued all the products onto the planter and then, using grout, finished the planters. It was a great deal of work and effort but everyone was quite pleased with the finished products....
Riverview resident and community volunteer Roger Boddaert hosted a Neighborhood Watch meeting for fellow residents of Riverview Drive and its adjacent roads on June 20 because he felt it would be a good idea for the neighbors to “regroup” due to what he considers some unsettling happenings in the area. His neighbors must have agreed, because they turned out in healthy numbers. “We need to do whatever we can to protect and preserve our neighborhood,” said Boddaert. Not too long ago, in the Riverview area, a residen... Full story
The plan that the members of the Fallbrook Historical Society have come up with for an annual Old Fashioned Barn Sale is a great one and offers multiple benefits. It combines the best of both worlds – being able to browse through a barn full of great bargains (items previously owned by another member of the community) and cleaning out and donating good items you don’t need around your house any more. Here’s the deal: the Historical Society encourages all residents to go through their homes, garages, storage sheds and attic...
The devoted volunteers of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance (FBA) carefully sorted through 3,000 numbered rubber ducks on June 15 in preparation for the annual “Quack-Up Cup Race,” an annual part of the Grand Tradition Fourth of July event that involves a race across their beautiful heart-shaped lake. Race chairperson Jackie Edgerton led a team of volunteers, including her neighbors, dubbed the “Canonita Road Gang,” in reorganizing the ducks. Edgerton’s lawn was the site for the organizational effort. Each year the ducks...
Summer is descending on Fallbrook, bringing temperatures in the 100s, and as the Santa Ana winds rustle leaves left dry by the winter freeze, the prospect of fire grows ominous. With 22 years on the job, Fire Marshall Sid Morel carries the weight of Fallbrook fire safety on his shoulders. With an enormous responsibility few match, he comes to work each day with the dedication of a warrior facing a menacing foe. And, fire is a formidable foe – like the Gavilan Fire in 2002 that destroyed over 43 homes and outbuildings, the r... Full story

April Ventuleth strides confidently through the small barn. As she does, lambs and goats look her way and begin to bleat. “They’re hungry, I feed them,” she says, quickly measuring out a small can of food and pouring it into a trough. A lamb bumps against her. “This is my lamb, Sherlock. I have to walk him and he doesn’t like it.” She touches his soft face with its big brown eyes. He nuzzles her hand. She talks to the lamb, soothing it, then reaches into a worn wooden box and pulls out a green halter and leash. April slips...

We of St. John’s Episcopal Church would like to thank the people of Fallbrook for making our “Used Treasures Sale” on June 9 such a great success. From the sale of gently used articles donated by the community, we were able to contribute $1,600 to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society on Camp Pendleton. This great nonprofit organization has been at work since 1904 helping Sailors, Marines and their families overcome temporary financial hardship. It is nice to know that “Support Our Troops” is not a hollow slogan in the town... Full story
As a resident living near St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Stage Coach Lane, I was appalled when I drove by last Saturday (June 16) and saw the flag-waving protesters out in front of the Sanctuary. I was brought up to believe that the Church was sacred ground, a sanctuary to support and protect all the oppressed and needy, no matter what their circumstance. This is a telling sign of where this fringe element is really going. I mentioned this incident to my parents, who grew up in Germany during World War II, and their r...
I can’t believe that the average votes can’t see the real purpose behind Bloomberg’s switch from being Republican to being an Independent. It all relates to splitting the Democratic vote in the next Presidential election and thereby allowing the Republican candidates to get more votes than either the Democratic or Independent candidates can garner separately. He’s playing the same successful card that Sen. Lieberman of Connecticut played in the last election. That is, appeal to the large Jewish vote by catering to Israel...
The Fallbrook Garden Club wants to thank the garden owners who opened their beautiful gardens to make our June 9 Garden Tour so successful. The seven gardens, all located in Fallbrook, and the La Paloma School were a wonderful example of the diversity of plants that can flourish in North San Diego County. The Village Square was the location for much activity in the morning as local vendors, Santa Margarita Nursery, Mariscal Cactus & Succulents, Advanced Gloves and The Glass Ranch, who offered garden art, a tremendous variety... Recent research by Henrik Svensmark and his group at the Danish National Space Center points to the real cause of the recent warming trend. In a series of experiments on the formation of clouds, these scientists have shown that fluctuations in the sun’s output cause the observed changes in the Earth’s temperature. In the past, scientists believed the fluctuations in the sun’s output were too small to cause the observed amount of temperature change, hence the need to look for other causes like carbon dioxide. However, these...
My husband, James Callahan, and I have lived in Fallbrook for the past few years. He has been a working actor for many years and has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. We have had the great good fortune to meet Paulette Thurlow, who cares for our dog when we travel. During this very stressful time she had taken our little Maltese, Prince Kelly Callahan of Ireland (“Kelly” for short), for no payment because she is a true angel and puts others before herself. These days with so many negative things in our liv... Full story
Let’s see... Bush vetoes stem cell funding, then vetoes the timetable funding of the war, then stem cell research funding again, “so that we do not cross moral lines.” This coming from a pea brained president who can not connect a verb and a noun, and who does not have vision. He constantly crosses the “moron” line. He vetoed this because Dobson won’t let him pass it. His lack of vision has set this country back seven years in medical research, four years in a search for the real villain of 9/11, seven years in reduction of d...
Well-meaning Republicans are going to have to answer to their children and grandchildren for approximately $30,000 debt that we are dumping on them. This includes the Jerry Fallwell branch of the ‘Religious Right’ who has voted in our ‘leaders’ who have created most of this, and, by the way, scoffed at our environmental issues. In the last 26 years, our national debt has grown from a trillion to eight trillion, yet Bush has thrown gasoline on the fire by taking millions of taxes off his richest supporters, including our inc...
A few months ago, I posted this article on our newsletter-from Brother’s Bistro. “There is now a $10,000 reward for the guy that has started 40 fires in the Oceanside/Bonsall area near the San Luis Rey River. Here’s his description according to the N.C. Times – roughly 6-foot-tall, 40-year-old man in a trench coat. Sgt. Leonard Mata told reporters ‘We seriously need to catch this guy and get him behind bars! Keep your eyes open! A 6-foot guy in a trench coat? He should be easy to spot. This person was setting fires weekly ne... Full story
