  • Spiritual fitness

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

Recently, I’ve been so blessed to be working out with a wonderful fitness trainer. (Thanks, Roy!) He instills confidence in my fitness program because he is a knowledgeable guide to keep me on track. So when I wanted to exercise my Christian understanding for this column, I had to find some real experts in the field of apologetics who make it their business to defend faith. Lee Strobel, a savvy Chicago Tribune reporter, is one such expert. Lee traveled the US for 21 months interviewing thirteen leading scholars and a...

  • 'Why?'

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

A professor of philosophy had given his students an examination. The last question simply read: “Why?” The professor passed only two of his students. One had written, “Why not?” and the other answered, “Because.” Some of life’s most profound questions are put in the single word “Why?” Why must people suffer? Why can’t I be like everyone else? Why do I have to have this disease? Why am I poor and unlucky? Why did my mother have to die? Why am I a victim of floods? Why is my son missing in action? Why can’t we have a chi... Full story

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

I just wanted to say that I am very sorry to hear about Mr. Callahan’s condition [“Paulette is a true angel,” Village News, Opinion, 6/28/07]. I was lucky enough to meet him one day while he was walking his dog, “Prince Kelly,” in the neighborhood we share and he was warm and friendly. I was quick to recognize him from “Charles in Charge,” since I was a huge fan of the show as a kid. I wish the best for him and his family and will have him in my prayers. Rachael McSheehy...

  • RE: 'Our national debt' [Village News, Opinion, 6/28/07]

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

Jesse Ford mentions that in the last 26 years our national debt has grown from $1 trillion to $8 trillion and then goes on to state how wise Warren Buffett is to oppose Bush’s effort to kill the estate tax, since “inherited wealth is an almost sure way to ruin the next generation.” It’s interesting, Mr. Ford, that you bring up both these issues, implying that one can take care of the other. Obviously since the death tax is in full working order, it does not appear to be putting a dent in our national debt, as you deduce...

  • President Bush grants clemency for Libby

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

Saying that the sentence of former Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff, I. “Scooter” Libby, was excessive, President Bush granted a degree of clemency by dropping the entire jail sentence imposed by the judge in the case. The whole essence of the case was simply stated by Federal Prosecutor Fitzgerald: there was evidence that someone in the administration purposely disclosed the identity of an undercover CIA agent and that Libby lied to a Grand Jury to prevent the disclosure of that act of treason. After a lengthy trial...
