  • A call for help

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

When Tim O’Brien answers a call for help, he answers it in a big way. This Fallbrook businessman, who has lived here since he was an infant, has just donated $10,000 worth of tractor work for the barn project (the Donald Jack Rivers Interpretive Center) on the grounds of the Fallbrook Historical Society museum. “They asked me if I would do it,” O’Brien said. “I have a long history with a lot of the members of the Historical Society. I’ve been in Fallbrook all my life and I think this is a good project. It will help people...

  • Incorporation for Fallbrook not an option

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

While I generally agree completely with Ray Carney’s letters about various subjects, he’s way off on incorporation. Every few years cityhood for Fallbrook rears its ugly head, and once the numbers are run, it fades back into its well deserved oblivion. There are several reasons. I’ll name a few major obstacles: One, the county has a law nicknamed “double dipping.” It requires any county-run town that incorporates to continue to pay the county the revenues it would lose if it lost that town to cityhood. So new cities mu... Full story

  • The reply from the Post Office

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

This was the reply from the Post Office I received about unwanted junk mail. “There are a few different ways you can take your name off of the mailing lists that distribute advertisements. First, you can write any one or all of the following companies with the full name of each individual in your home, address, and a specific request to stop receiving mail from their agency. This will stop the delivery to your home for five years, and then the request needs to be submitted again: • Mail Preference ServiceDirect Marketing Ass...

  • Men can enjoy pedicures too!

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

Men! Are your eyes not as good as they used to be? Do you have trouble clipping your toenails? Well, I did! Last June I had emergency surgery and ended up with a colonoscopy bag, which I had until the surgery was reversed on November 30. The surgeries went well and I’ve had a full recovery. During or after the first surgery I had a ‘small stroke’ which affected the peripheral vision in my left eye (my good eye). Since I haven’t had much peripheral vision in my right eye since an aneurysm damaged it in 1989, this was really... Full story

  • Having problems with Fallbrook Post Office

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

Thank you for publishing my letter about junk mail, but now it’s the Fallbrook Post Office I am having problems with. Even though I have gone through all this to delete the bulk mail/junk mail that is delivered, the US Post Office has deemed it important reading and is now stuffing my mailbox with more crap that is not even addressed to me, meaning it is bulk mail and has no address at all. I am tired of having to pay for “throwing out trash” for something I did not want and have asked not to receive. If there is some human... Full story

  • July 4 was a wonderful evening

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

Regarding the July 4 celebration, I would like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance, the staff of the Grand Tradition and especially Arlyne Ingold, the sponsor for the event. What a wonderful evening! The well-orchestrated event was overflowing with good humor and fun from the surf music to the tasty food and lively contests. Capping the evening was an absolutely spectacular fireworks display that far exceeded all expectations. A highlight was Arlyne Ingold on stage...

  • What's his next move?

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

Do I have this right? The recall petition to unseat the legally elected Governor of California (Davis) was originally floated by Republican Kaloogian. The attempt was going nowhere ’til Republican Congressman Issa personally put up massive amounts of his own money to make the petition drive a success. In the ensuring run-up to the election Issa was shoved aside, as were all other candidates, as the “Terminator” exercised some muscle. The big catalyst, of course, was the unpopular attempt by Governor Davis to raise reven...

  • RE: 'What will Mr. Thompson do now?'

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

Mr. Thompson will continue to do what he has always done… serve his community. I am a native Fallbrookian, 24 years old, married, and my wife and I are expecting an addition to our family at the beginning of the new year. I am also a DIRECT beneficiary of the volunteer service of Bruce Thompson, contrary to what Ms. Russo would have you believe. He was my Sunday school teacher and Scout Leader and he has stirred my soul on countless occasions to be active in my community, love my country and “choose the right.” From his e...

  • Fallbrook

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

I have one question for Jessica Knox in response to “A warning and a call for help — be safe, Fallbrook!” (7/6/06). Did you think that Fallbrook or any other city in America is the Land of Oz? Would you leave the doors and windows open at your home? Then why would you leave your vehicles open all night with valuables in plain sight and not expect to have them stolen? Just because Fallbrook has rolling hills, wide open spaces and clean air does not mean that crime is non-existent. Car thefts even happen in Rancho Santa Fe. I...

  • Thanks for a successful Grand Tradition Fourth of July!

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

The success of “Fallbrook’s Grand Tradition Fourth of July” celebration was due in large part to those of you in our community who supported this annual fundraising event for the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance. We are most appreciative of your support. It could not have been a reality without the generosity of the McDougal family, Arlyne Ingold, Supervisor Bill Horn and Major Market — all of whom made major contributions to this event. Thanks also to our Alliance partners, the business community, the organizing committ... Full story

  • I will never return to Fallbrook

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

I was born in Fallbrook. I moved to Oregon in ’79. I have made many trips back to care for my parents the last 10 years. This time I brought my 15-year-old dog. Because we live in the forest area where there is no traffic, in Fallbrook I would walk him in the (empty) field in the vicinity of Elder and Potter. The field, however, is not empty. It is full of illegals and their trash. School kids are vandalizing an empty house. People are dumping their yard waste and leaving their yard equipment sitting there, which has also b...

  • RE: 'Fed up with spam'

    Updated Jul 14, 2006

If the USPC is anything similar to our Canada Post (I suspect there is little difference between the two), you’re eventually going to get the following story… “Commercial advertisers have prepaid postage accounts these circulars, etc. are sent through. It would be illegal for us to NOT put this mail in your box. The individual postman as well, whether he/she sympathizes with you or not, cannot be asked to stop delivering the bulk mail advertisements, as it would be a direct refusal to perform duties he/she is required to do...
