HOMELAND (Wire Service) - A 24-year-old Corona man died today, July 22, when he lost control of his pickup truck and smashed into a tree near the community of Homeland, west of Hemet, a fire department spokeswoman said. Barrett Gomez crashed at 1:05 a.m. along state Highway 74, west of Contrite Avenue, said Jody Hagemann of the fire department. The coroner pronounced him dead at the scene at 1:23 a.m. The California Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the crash....

SAN JACINTO (Wire Service) - A Beaumont woman, who an off-duty police officer said tried to break into his car in San Jacinto, was arrested on suspicion of a string of vehicle burglaries, a sheriff's sergeant said today. At about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the officer said Katilynn Nicole Koumparis, 22, tried to break into his car in the area of Idyllwild Drive and Eagle Road, according to Sgt. Joey Nardone. RIVERSIDE - A Moreno Valley man shot by a Riverside County sheriff's deputy for allegedly holding a knife to a baby's throat during a domestic dispute was transferred today from a hospital to a jail cell. Jose Soto Medina, 36, was shot during a confrontation with deputies on Saturday night at 22424 Ella St. in Moreno Valley. He was transferred to sheriff's custody and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside around 2:30 this morning. L.A. COUNTY (Wire Service) - Two alleged drunk drivers hit each other and then plowed into a construction crew on the San Diego (405) Freeway in the South Bay today, July 22 and killed two road workers from the Inland Empire. The workers were identified as Ramon Lopez, 56, of Chino Hills and Ricardo Zamora, 58, of Winchester in Riverside County, said Coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie.
