Fallbrook Brandon Gallery is very grateful to the wonderful friends who came and supported Brandon at its “Art by the Inch Fundraiser” in June. As a not-for-profit (501C-3), every dollar the gallery takes in is necessary for survival in this economy. Thank you Vince Ross, the Miller Family, Genco Printers and Ponte Winery for their donations which hel...
What are the choices for hazardous waste disposal for Fallbrook and other San Diego County citizens? Being an environmentally responsible citizen, I want to dispose of my toxic waste in a safe manner. This is very difficult if you live in San Diego County. (Maybe the Pala dump site will make it better – just kidding). So, I called the local refuse service Fallbrook Waste & Recycling. I was sent to Ramona, no details given, just “go.” From my house to Ramona it is 43.73 miles and the estimated time is 53 minutes. Tim...
Heartfelt thanks to the Fallbrook Fire Department for compassion, professionalism, courtesy and service in home assistance, and transportation to the hospital, for various emergencies over the past year and a half. How fortunate Fallbrook residents are to have such excellent service available. Thank you again. Joyce, Leonard a...
I just read an article in the USA Today where just six years ago there were 17,000 people that worked for the shuttle program. The end of the shuttle program will leave approximately 1,000 people employed by the space program. What was the President thinking when he ended the shuttle program? A loss of over 16,000 jobs! At one time the American space shuttle program was a template for all nations that would design programs for space flight; now a mere shamble. Now, there will be 16,000 people out of work looking for work....
I’ve been incredulously following the fight in the legislature between no-tax-increase and pro-tax-increase legislators. A few days ago, I heard that Governor Brown’s proposed one percent increase in sales tax and extension of vehicle surcharges were not approved. I think that many essential services and projects, which benefit all, are now not adequately funded. I think that increased taxes are the most fair and efficient way to fund these services. For example, a vehicle surcharge could support CHP patrols and enf...
If you were blindfolded and unfortunate enough to be in a car going 20 mph that crashed head on into an identical car going 20 mph, followed the next day by being in a car going 20 mph when it crashed into a brick wall, you would not be able to tell the difference. The forces involved on you would be identical. In each case you would come to an immediate stop and then bounce back a little. The [CHP] should not add the rates as suggested in the article. If they don’t believe it, please ask another mathematician or p...
I have always believed that we should support local businesses whenever possible. There is one merchant in Fallbrook that makes this easy: Scrappy’s. Larry and Steve Scrape (father and son) provide a reliable and trustworthy place for automotive services. They represent what makes America tick; small business with hard work and integrity as the backbone of the business. I heartily recommend Scrappy’s. Ted Young... Full story

There is a wave of creative thinking about the future of gardening and interwoven lifestyles, and it is called permaculture. The original idea for permaculture came from Australia in the late 70s when two naturalists out in the Tasmanian forests were inspired by the interconnectedness of the rich and abundant ecosystems they observed. They saw nature and the indigenous cultures working in harmony and hoped that the principles could be applied to sound ecological, productive...
SAN DIEGO – National safety statistics show that adults age 65 and older are two times more likely to die in a home fire than any other segment of the population, and for those over age 75 that risk nearly quadruples. Yet, thousands of seniors throughout San Diego and Imperial counties live in homes without a working smoke alarm. One way seniors can improve the chances of escaping a home fire is by making sure their home is equipped with a working smoke alarm. The Burn Institute’s Senior Smoke Alarm Program provides s...
