Fallbrook High School’s gymnastics team held its post-season award banquet June 11 at the Temecula home of co-coach Kayla Alonso. “It was a really fun time,” Alonso said. “We just took some time to recognize our awarded gymnasts.” In addition to the awards, the banquet included lunch catered by Panda Express, and the team photograph was also taken that afternoon. The Fallbrook Associated Swim Team (FAST) hosted a 12-and-over no time standard meet July 8 through 10 at Fallbrook High School which drew approximately 250 swimmers from throughout Southern California. The events included seven which were won by Fallbrook 14-year-old Bobby Guerra and one in which 16-year-old Sam McDaniels of Fallbrook took first place. “Everybody that swam in it had probably 50 percent best times, so it’s showing improvement,” said FAST director Sean Redmond. The Guac Girls, Fallbrook High School’s off-season field hockey team, won their pool in the Cal Cup tournament May 27 to 29 in Moorpark before losing their semifinal match in a penalty stroke shootout. “They did amazing. They played very well,” said Guac Girls coach Kirstin Mueller. The track and field athletes or relay teams with their division’s top six times or distances in each event receive medals at the CIF finals, and the May 28 finals at Mount Carmel High School produced medals for Fallbrook High School senior Amanda Mulkey and Warrior junior Hannah Wilson. Jacob Marvin “Marv” Van Voorst passed away on July 22, 2011, with his family by his side. Born Dec. 6, 1935, in Iowa, Marv moved to California after joining the Navy. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce, in 1958 and moved to Fallbrook in 1971 with his family. Marv was an avid fisherman, a classic car enthusiast and he loved to travel with Joyce. August Ridgely Park passed on July 19, 2011, at Silvergate Retirement Residence in Fallbrook while under hospice care. Ridgely was born in Baltimore, Md. on June 4, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Park. Edna Carolyn Riedell of Vista, beloved wife of William “Bill” Riedell, passed away July 16, 2011. Born in Long Beach to Carl O. and Myrtle Titchenal Wheat, Edna attended schools in Orange County, moving to Lake Tahoe in 1943, the same year she joined the WAVES.
