  • Baptism to rebirth

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

Vacationing this past week on the steamy Colorado River where desert temperatures topped off at 124 degrees, I found myself pondering the meaning of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River. Where our family’s vacation home is situated at the foot of Parker Dam, the water is drawn from the bottom of Lake Havasu, leaving it shockingly cold to dive into when you’ve been roasting in the inferno-like conditions. Standing perched to dive in, I would look deeply into the darkness of the rushing emerald river teeming with life. My body...

  • Thank you to Fallbrook friends of Tonda Haynes

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

In May of 2000 my daughter, Tonda Haynes, 25, lost her 17-month battle with a brain tumor while living with us here in Fallbrook. We were relatively new residents and the people of Fallbrook wrapped their arms around us warmly. A scholarship fund was subsequently started at Texas Tech University, where she had graduated in 1996. My husband, Chas Mudie, and two friends, Harvey Lee and Chuck Heincy, who called themselves “The Fallbrook Flyers,” rode the 100-mile Big Bear Bicycle for support for the scholarship in 2004. Our fri... Full story

  • Pests of Fallbrook?

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

Many local businesses know what it is like to look out the front window and see skateboarders ruining private property. This takes time out of everyone’s life. It takes time for the one who spotted the unwanted guests to go tell them to leave, it takes time for the groundskeeper to repaint handrails and it takes time for the skaters to find a different “skate spot.” Telling them to leave will only keep them away for a short while. Soon they will be back discoloring the newly painted handrail. The skaters are a problem not o... Full story

  • Who supports our troops?

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

This is an open letter to all military personnel, their families and all Americans who wish to support our troops regardless of their feelings on this war. I was absolutely astonished when I visited the Disabled American Veterans Web site’s legislative report on their ratings of California congressmen on how friendly their votes were to military and disabled veterans. Not one Republican Congressman got 100 percent (except Brian Bilbray, who was not in office for all issues), and all Democrat Congressmen got 100 percent. Repor...
