    Updated Aug 4, 2011

The county’s Code Enforcement division has issued an administrative warning to a property owner who had allowed Skydive America parachuters to land on his vacant lot just north of Fallbrook Community Airpark. The skydivers had been landing on the Foxfire Lane property owned by Jerry Aberle, but complaints about the skydivers landing on Fallbrook properties led to Aberle being issued the cease and desist notice. “I was trying to help a local airport business,” said Aberle. “I told [Skydive America]: ‘sure, as long as there... Full story

  • No Tdap shot, no entry into school, officials say - Students entering grades 7-12 must have vaccine to begin fall session

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

Officials at Fallbrook and Bonsall schools are adamant when they say students entering grades 7 through 12 for the fall term must show proof of having a combined tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) booster or they will not be admitted to class when school begins on August 29. The new mandate, issued by the State of California through Assembly Bill 354, has been enacted due to the record number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases seen recently. “We don’t want a situation where we have to pull kids out of class and sch...

  • More stop lights needed on East Mission

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

I live on one of the many cross streets that litter East Mission. Over the past few years I have found it increasingly difficult to pull out onto East Mission during the rush hour, most specifically the eastbound lane. A good majority of the individuals traveling this road are from Camp Pendleton and heading out of town to Temecula. It has gotten so bad recently that I have had to drive in the complete opposite direction to turn around and head east. There are no stop lights for any of these cross streets. This causes a...

  • Beware of panhandler

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

I am writing to let the people of Fallbrook know of a panhandler in our area who is becoming more aggressive in his actions, and I feel, therefore, more dangerous. I have had five encounters with him in the past year. He is clean-dressed and shaven, wears prescription glasses, about 40 years old and Hispanic. He claims he has recently walked all the way from Guatemala and asks for money to buy food. He puts on a good show initially. He has been observed at Los Jilgueros Preserve taking people by the arm to get them to go to... Full story

  • Is Congressman Issa listening?

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

A few weeks ago, I decided to call my local congressman, Darrel Issa, to let him know what I, a constituent, thought about taxes and spending cuts. The conventional wisdom is that personal calls and hard copy letters from constituents are more influential than emails and that input from non-constituents is worthless, which makes sense because, after all, the constituents elect the politicians. A live person answered the Issa headquarters phone. I told her I had an opinion, she said go ahead. I said my piece and the call was...

  • Find what you are looking for downtown

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

Recently, on a hot summer’s day, my granddaughter Baylee and I were spending the day together. She wanted to make some mattresses for her dolls and asked if we could get some fabric. She loves to shop downtown but I was doubtful if we could find any fabric. Then she reminded me of the shop where we had bought some yarn some months ago. So, we headed for Labors of Love downtown on Main Street. What a surprise! We found a beautiful assortment of fabrics, covered buttons, packages of fabric pieces and pre-cut quilting squares &... Full story

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

  • Nair Construction to the rescue!

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

We recently called on Nair Construction to help with what was going to be a small do-it-yourself project, but turned out to be a little more complicated than anticipated. Mark Nair arrived at 8 o’clock in the morning after our call for help. The door that refused to allow itself to be installed didn’t stand a chance against Mark and his impressive skills. The first time we experienced the high quality work of Nair Construction was 17 years ago when they put a brand new roof on our house. Nair Construction does excellent wor...

  • Dancing with the Scars - The saga of a recent knee replacement surgery

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

For a dozen years, I’ve taken the prescription medication Celebrex to help with my sore knees, frequently urged on by extensive claims on television that the product would hide the pain of arthritis… and maybe even help me resume my dance floor moves. No such luck. So, nearly three months ago, I agreed to take a surgical step to see what a knee replacement might achieve. My surgeon in Murrieta agreed that it was time, but I was told that getting me on the schedule at any of...
