SAN DIEGO – Many parents may not know that school supplies and a cute backpack are not the only things their child needs to start school. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency would like to remind parents of kindergartners and first-graders to complete necessary health and dental check-ups before school begins this fall. California law requires all children entering first grade to have a health check-up. Even if a child is not sick, a medical check-up allows the doctor to find and treat many health... Full story
Richard Loomis’ July 23, 2010 letter to the Californian “Entitled to Opinions” overlooks and misstates facts: 1) Granite’s “environmental expert” Lilburn Corporation, San Bernardino, was suddenly and unexpectedly brought in at the last minute by Granite. Why? “Go read” as Loomis would say: Lilburn’s website, www.lilburncorp.com. It shows background photos of huge ammonium nitrate blasting quarries, and lists dozens of satisfied mining companies as clients. Click on Lilburn’s mission statement: “getting to yes.” Lilburn know...
That was so interesting about Poe’s poem displaying the mathematical design of seven in his first line of the Raven. I was impressed that a man could do it to that extent, especially with the number representing a complete unit. Remember, the Nobel research foundation has agreed with the statement “Man could not have written the Bible” after studying those 43,000 pages of mathematical proof. If someone omits or adds something, it alerts the need for comparison with another ancient copy. Yes, putting faith in structure and n...
On Saturday evening, July 24, my husband and I had a guest in from Los Angeles and were planning a trip to the movies for some entertainment. We heard from some friends in Fallbrook they were going to see a reggae show so we decided to join them and we are so glad that we did! I have been to lots of live concerts and was thrilled to see a performer so outstanding as Pato Banton right here in our village. His music and message lifted our spirits, the crowd was diverse and harmonious, the weather perfect. We danced and sang...
I’ve recently learned of Caltrans’ plans for the final link of Highway SR76 (from Mission Road to I-15) wherein they propose two alternative routes for this work. The Southern alternative would provide for a potential of a six lane uninterrupted highway and leave the existing SR 76 route to serve as a frontage road. The Northern alternative proposes a realignment of the existing SR76 with a maximum of only four lanes. The Northern route plan would also restrict access onto and off of the highway from many of the res...
My personal thanks and admiration go out to the young lady pulling a three-horse trailer, loaded no less, who pulled over on a very busy Mission Road to stop and help two dogs running loose in heavy traffic last week. While other motorists either scurried by or waited impatiently, this kind soul opened the door of her truck to allow a large, tail-wagging, road-wandering dog to jump in and be safe from oncoming traffic, and then pulled over in an attempt to capture his escape buddy, a little wiener dog. Being right behind her,...

My wife and I would like to commend you on a very nice event we attended on Saturday, July 24, celebrating the National Day of the American Cowboy held at Calamity Jeans. We enjoyed everything - the music by TC Trio, the tri-tip dinner, the chili cook-off, the pie-la-mode, the ambiance, and the company of the friendly people from Fallbrook. We won one of the door prizes and that really made us happy. Stan Kruml read a dedication to the American cowboy and some of his cowboy poetry which added to the event. All in all, it was... As a music lover and a merchant in the Fallbrook community, I would like to thank Julie Reeder for producing a wonderful concert event under the stars Saturday night, July 24. The Soul Roll is the kind of event that we need to bring people into our town. Pato Banton is a cut above any performer that I can ever remember playing in Fallbrook during my 30 years here. The crowd of all ages was peaceful, happy and well behaved. I hope that we can get offerings of similar quality in the future. But this was a dream. Thank you... Full story
Nita Delnay’s letter of July 29 is full of accusations about Liberty Quarry and its impacts with the usual omission of sources and specifics about her fears and accusations. The reality is that our region is going to continue to grow. We want and need new roads, new hospitals, new tourism attractions and new public facilities that feed our economy. And unless we have a new, local source of aggregate to build those roads and facilities we will continue to bring all that material from distant places, which is horrible for t...
I was reading the headlines regarding several Latino activists taking people by bus from California to Arizona to protest SB 1070. My question for the activists is did you read the bill? If not, you should read the bill, where you will learn, as I did, that there is nothing (nada, zip-zero, nothing) concerning racial profiling. We all know the game plan for the 2010 mid-term elections. The Democrats are “beaugarding” the Latinos for their vote. It seems most Democrats running for re-election are running scared and rig... You deserve it. It is high time for some girlfriend-getaway encouragement. Don’t over think this one. Just decide on a destination, pack a weekend bag, and get the heck out of town for a few days. Call it the irresponsibility of summer, but this is a good chance to leave the family at home (forget about that stressful road trip!) and instead spend some fun time bonding with friends. There are so many places in Southern California and beyond for girlfriends to go for a day o...
