Chin’s in Vista serves food that is billed as “Szechwan” cuisine. Szechwan tends to run on the hot and spicy side, but the dishes I had were flavorful and not too hot. The “Pu Pu Platter” has its origins in Hawaii, not China, but it has grown in popularity as a Chinese restaurant starter plate. The word, spelled a bit differently – pūpū – in the Hawaiian language, basically means appetizer. At Chin’s the “Pu Pu Platter” is served with a flaming pot in... Full story

Under the direction of art instructor Ashley Scibilia, students in several classes...
It takes a village to raise a child, but sometimes it takes one person to stand up and move that village into action. That one person can spark the passion in the community to truly transform the lives of others for the better. One person who has slowly ignited that spark is Mayra Pelayo, a 25-year-old Fallbrook resident. Pelayo has always volunteered throughout the community in various ways, including at the public library in Fallbrook, but after a serious illness last year,...

The mushroom cloud was at 40,000 feet when Fallbrook’s Vern Rowley was able to look back and see the historical, ominous cloud formed by the atomic bomb blast on Hiroshima, Japan, Aug. 6, 1945. “The top of the mushroom was about five times the width of the stem and probably three football fields wide, when I saw it,” reflected Rowley. “It was a mixture of white and gray smoke, and it was rising fast. The blast occurred seven hours after the mission had departed Tinian Island,... Full story

I would like to thank S. R. Hayes for helping to spread the word that our lovely library does indeed offer great entertainment and learning opportunities for all ages. The librarians do a wonderful job in planning most of these activities. People should be aware that their budget from the County is very limited and if it weren’t for The Friends of the Fallbrook Library we would not be able to enjoy these programs. The Bottom Shelf Bookstore (adjacent to the entrance to the library) is operated by volunteers who are members o... Full story
Our state’s economy seems to be improving, slowly. California has a small budget surplus this year as a result of higher than expected tax revenues and recent reports show our unemployment rate has decreased slightly to 8.5 percent. Our small recovery, combined with the economic crisis in Europe, means that California will probably regain its position as the eighth-ranked economy in the world. Our 2012 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) gain of 3.5 percent put us into a tie with Minnesota for the fifth-largest increase in the n...
Living on the West Coast for over a year now, I can truly say, I love living in Fallbrook. I knew that moving from the East Coast would certainly bring changes and adjustments. I also knew full well that I would be living among snakes, lizards, rodents of all kinds, and coyotes. Everyone tells me over and over how we need the coyote; they help keep the rodent population in check and the fruit and vegetable growers would be lost without them. But what happens when these so-called helpful animals, climb fences in broad... Full story

Last week I received my latest bill from the Rainbow Water District for $72.97. Included was a newsletter on which the back side they asked “How much profit does Rainbow make?” On reading the answer of “none,” on the amount of water, I had to laugh out loud. On the bill, $11.80 was for the water (4 units or 2,992 gallons). $61.17 was for operation, maintenance, and fixed fees. That puts the water at 16 percent of the bill and operation, maintenance, and fixed fees at 84 percent of the bill, or over five times the cost of... Full story
