Petitioners taking the first step toward unifying the Bonsall Union School District and that portion of the Fallbrook Union High School District met before the San Diego County Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Randolph E. Ward on Monday night at the Bonsall Community Center. The public hearing on the petition focused primarily on building a high school in the Bonsall area to accommodate students enrolled in its district. About 50 parents with young children in tow listened to arguments for and against the...

On behalf of all of the volunteers at Fallbrook People to People Services (a free employment referral service), I want to thank stylists Wanda Ramos, Diane Hartcorn, Carmen Schober, Linda L’Hirondelle, Donnella Varela and owner Chrissy McDaniel of the Mane Attraction Hair Nail and Skin Salon for staging a “Cut-a-Thon” fundraiser on our behalf. The stylists donated all proceeds from the July 29 event to our nonprofit organization. And I extend a separate special thank you to all of the Fallbrook retail establishments that... Full story
In the past year, both my wife and I have been admitted to the Fallbrook Hospital Emergency Room. We would like to thank the ER staff for the excellent care we received. All necessary treatment and tests were done in a timely and efficient manner. In addition, the staff communicated and coordinated our treatment with our primary care physician. The ER staff were friendly, caring and professional and put our anxieties at ease. With the current demand on our healthcare system, we are fortunate and thankful for the excellent... Full story
I wonder what Al Gore has done to Chris Fuller to deserve Mr. Fuller’s diatribe? If he was embarrassed by the actions of his adult son, where’s the sin? I would expect that George Bush might have had a similar reaction every time his teenaged daughters had their drunken escapades publicized. Mr. Gore did not steal the 2000 election; he isn’t responsible for the quagmire in Iraq, he hasn’t repeatedly spit on our Constitution, he hasn’t made deals with China allowing contaminated food, faulty tires and a million lead-pois...
Recently, I took my houseguests to the movies and we decided upon “Sicko.” I’m not here to elaborate on the quality of Michael Moore’s movie – you need to see it for yourself. My story relates to the conversation we enjoyed at a local restaurant on the way home. My guests were from Britain and they both agreed, in essence, that the movie really brought home to them the inadequacies of the US medical system. Heretofore, they saw America as a rich country and, therefore, should have superior medical coverage across the board... Full story
What if John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt had not stood up to protect Yosemite Valley? What if someone had said, “Hey, look at Half Dome! That’s a great source of granite for you!” I have loved and painted these hills since I was a boy. The representatives of the Granite Construction Company have said about their misleadingly named Liberty Quarry project: “You won’t see it. You won’t hear it. You won’t smell it. You won’t feel it. You won’t even know it’s there.” I don’t believe it for a second. This will be one of the largest o...
Two US financial proposals are in the news this week. First, the $40 billion-plus armament package for Middle Eastern nations: $20 billion for Saudi Arabia, $13 billion for Egypt and a 25-percent increase in military aid to Israel. The other proposal is the continued funding of the State Child Health Care Program (SCHIP) for America’s children. Which does Bush support, and which does he oppose? Illogically, Bush is pressing hard for the Middle Eastern armament package and renouncing the children’s healthcare plan. It see...
Four years ago we chose [space number] 98, not because of the coach, not because of the neighbors and not because of any of the amenities. We chose it solely because of the backyard and its potential and because of the graceful, beautiful 200-year-old oak tree that was in residence. We added a great deal to the backyard, including a deck and lots of flowers, and enjoyed all the birds that made their home in the old oak tree. Then, one day, totally unknown to us (why should we be informed? We just rent, we don’t own) a tree s...
The July 25 meeting at Temeku Hills was planned by the HOA to inform homeowners and surrounding communities about the quarry. Granite Construction and SDSU were invited to speak. SOS-Hills was involved from the beginning. Granite was informed about every detail of the meeting. All communication was documented. There were no “surprises.” The meeting picked up momentum as people were informed. Hundreds of people received e-mails, fliers, phone calls. Forty-eight hours before the meeting, Granite backed out! Retreated wit... Full story
This is an open letter to the so-called Fallbrook Design and Review Board, the issue being your bullying and punishment of local businesses because of signs you do not approve of or you think the county would not approve of. As I have been making signs for business owners in Fallbrook since the late ’60s, I have some knowledge about this issue. Because I, and other merchants, have lost money due to your nonsensical anti-small-business, anti-sign, so-called Fallbrook beautification agenda, I thought it time to speak up. You h...
That was a well-presented editorial on the culture of tipping. Most old geezers like me grew up in an era (post-Depression) where having a job was a certain blessing and people in the food service business were more concerned about serving you properly than about what the tip would be. In a way, it was self-preservation. There were lots of people anxious to take that job. I see what’s happening today with tip jars popping up everywhere and concern for the customer fading on the list of priorities. It seems to me that no m... Full story
Fresh & Easy is learning that doing business in Fallbrook ain’t so easy! Crimes are up in the area where the Do-It Center was? It doesn’t show up in the Sheriff’s Log in the Village News. If crime is up there, why isn’t the new deputy-in-charge arresting criminals there? That’s his job! The type of customers who will shop and buy at Fresh & Easy are not the type to sit in the parking lot and drink beer and vandalize walls and cars. The new store is said to be a lot like Trader Joe’s, the nearest of which are in Temecula an...

BONSALL — On August 2 at approximately 5:30 a.m. Analyn M. Senko, 21, of Menifee was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla westbound on SR-76 west of Olive Hill Road at approximately 50 mph. Melchor B. Gonzalez, 48, of Vista was driving a Ford Aerostar eastbound on SR-76 at an unknown speed. For reasons yet unknown, Senko crossed over the solid double yellow lines, entered the opposing lane of traffic and collided head-on with the Aerostar. Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels, blocking the eastbound lane and partially c...
Building a new college campus is an immense undertaking. For Bonnie Dowd, assistant superintendent and vice president for finance and administrative services at Palomar College who will supervise the endeavor, it easily could dominate her life for years to come. Although the new Fallbrook education center campus is due to open in 2011, Dowd and others at Palomar College have set in motion a plan to accommodate students for the next 50 years. Located east of I-15 and north of SR-76, the Fallbrook center campus will be placed o... Full story
FALLBROOK — “The Santa Margarita River: The Last Free-Flowing River in Southern California,” a painting by local artist Jack Ragland, is now on display in the entrance to the Fallbrook Public Library.
