  • Classes cut at high school sicken me

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

Registration has started at the high school and there is a firestorm there. The cut classes you mentioned [“New superintendent selected for FUHSD; Costs now exceed $471,690 to replace Anthony; more than 25 classes cut,” Village News, 8/708] are upper-grade, upper-level classes. Many classes are only being taught once a day. They are referring the kids who need these classes for college requirements to MiraCosta College or Palomar. All the classes the kids would take there are two nights a week, three and a half hours a cla...

  • Garbage in, garbage out

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

An entire genre of music has taught a generation of children that drugs, violence and misogyny is so rampant that it is actually acceptable. Music video programs popular with young audiences are full of offensive/adult content. On Rap City and 106 & Park on BET and MTV’s Sucker Free on MTV, foul content appeared at an alarming rate: one instance every 38 seconds. (Parents Television Council: Rap on Rap Study) Every 38 seconds, children watching these programs are exposed to sexually charged images, explicit language, v...

  • RE: 'Crossover voting' [Letter, Village News, 7/24/08]

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

I really must take exception to this letter, not because the author, Ann Harter, hopes to negate my vote – that is her privilege – but because of her stated reasons. To characterize Sen. Obama as “probably non-American” or to suggest that his early days, “memories of a European youth,” somehow make him un-American indicate to me that you have an underlying sense of bigotry. I’m not convinced that her vote for Sen. McCain will cancel out my position; my letters will energize far more anti-Bush voters than will her narrow-mi...

  • Re: 'Hard times for ratepayers but not FPUD employees' [Letter, Village News, 8/7/08]

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

In response to Archie McPhee’s letter, I provide the following: I chaired the meetings that established the policies and implemented the FPUD Drought Management Plan. Stage 1 of the FPUD Drought Plan, asks ratepayers to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 10 per cent. Further, FPUD will not allow expansion of the FPUD service area, but will continue to provide water to our existing service area customers; who have been paying taxes and fees on their yearly tax bills. At Stage 2 and higher (which includes water rationing,...

  • Have a cook-pot full of fun

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

Entering a chili contest is a cook-pot full of work but a cook-pot full of fun as well. I am qualified to make that statement because the one and only chili contest I entered was a lot of work, a lot more fun, and I actually took home the gold plastic loving cup. Held in Salt Lake City, the contest had three divisions: Hot, Medium and Mild. I took first in the Medium Division, which was nicknamed “Almost Chili,” implying that if it isn’t raging hot, it isn’t really chili.... Full story

  • How does money affect our behavior?

    Updated Aug 14, 2008

You just won four season tickets to the Chargers. You now hold in your little hands a windfall that may enable you to get braces for little Billy, new tires for the old truck or just some fun at several football games. Do you hold onto the tickets or sell them? How much could you get for them? There is a school of economics called behavioral economics, and economists combine finance theory with psychology. They have come up with such insightful tidbits as noting that people often buy things they don’t need if the words ...
