It comes as no surprise to me that Irma Covarrubias, June 8, writes that it “doesn’t matter” whether fake ID cards and social security cards (read “fake” as “stolen”) are used to gain employment for illegal immigrants. If one has no problem breaking our immigration laws, they have no problem breaking our other laws. Obviously Irma has no concept of the damage done to innocent American citizens due to identity theft, or she just doesn’t care. A good example of that is the young wife and mother in Dublin, CA. Her social secu...
It was amusing but sad to read the letter written by the coaches’ wives club (the wives of three of the assistant football coaches) entitled “We’d like to clear things up,” published in the June 8 issue of the Village News. This whole scenario is nothing more than the “good ol’ boys” club (that has been in existence at Fallbrook High for too, too long) finally getting busted up. When are you women going to see this situation for what it really is? My advice to the three of you is to stop making foolish statements th...
Mason Weaver’s June 8 op-ed left me speechless… almost. In responding to Mr. Weaver’s mislabeled Opinion rant (it should have been titled “Intolerant and proud of it”), it’s hard to know where to begin because his position consists of unsubstantiated emotion and ill-fitting analogy aimed at a nebulous target, the intellectual equivalent of an attack on fog with birdshot. As is often the case in a Weaver op-ed, he draws an absurd caricature of the enemy with a standard of reality suitable only for comic book villains or...
If the Opinion page of the Village News is the yardstick by which the “Friendly Village” of Fallbrook is to be measured for friendliness, our fair village would come up short. The editorial staff at the Village News needs to be taken to task for allowing a journalist such as Mason Weaver a forum from which to send out his vitriolic messages of intolerance, arrogance and exclusion. (See “Are you tired of being called intolerant?” June 8, 2006) The time is now for the editors at the Village News to say to Mr. Weaver in his own...
I was awakened this morning at 4:45 a.m. by a ringing telephone. A call that early in the morning often brings bad news — sometimes news of a death. I braced myself. The call was indeed about a death, but the news wasn’t bad. The messenger was a producer for a television show requesting that I, half asleep, join her morning crew to discuss the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. “He’s dead?” I replied. “Wow. That’s good news.” By the time my wife arose, she found me grinning. I informed her of the reason for my excitement. She... Full story
Hello! My name is Taylor Stites and I am 13 years old. I have been a member of Fallbrook 4-H for seven years. I have been a member of the Fallbrook sheep project for four years. Some of the other projects that I enjoy are the rabbit project and the camping and fishing project. In addition to 4-H, I play trumpet in the Potter Cadet band and I am an active member in Boy Scout Troop 737. This year I am raising a Suffolk/Hampshire ewe lamb named Delta. She currently weighs about 130 pounds. I expect her to weigh between 135-140...
I have been reading the news reports about the head football coach at FUHS and the debit card issue with close attention because I have known some of the coaches personally for years. And it seems to me that the assistant football coaches are being implicated in the scandal by innuendo. This is not fair play. Superintendent Tom Anthony and the administration did not ask any of the coaches about the debit card until a week ago (Houlihan was first put on leave in March) and yet the debit card misuse is continually said to be a...
With news of the terrorist arrest in Canada the debate over border security is back in the news. Some are ridiculing the American attempt to secure its southern border by pointing to the problems on our northern border. After all, the terrorists were in Canada, not Mexico, and had ties to Americans in Georgia. Apparently there were training camps, purchasing of bomb-making materials and movements back and forth across our border. The detractors claim we are spending too much time and effort harassing the peaceful people of... Full story
It amazes me that it is OK in this country for 99.4 percent of the population to vote in and decide if .06 percent of the population will involuntarily fund a government program. I certainly do not make $400,000 per year and probable never will and I am fuming that Prop 82 came close to stealing from someone else’s pocketbook. Cheryl, you stated that “most importantly, it will cost parents nothing” and that “only a small percentage of California taxpayers will be affected with the majority of us not being taxed a penny.... As one who has had the great honor and privilege to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, I am appalled at the insolence of an organization which would debase that lovely place and monument to our nation’s dead by calling itself “Arlington West.” Arlington National Cemetery is a sacred place. For any organization to take its name is an injustice to all of us. The so-called “Veterans for Peace” is a political organization replete with disaffected veterans and a lot of veteran w... I am trying to reach Virginia Hill. She was my mother’s best friend (Shirley Stubbs) from high school and a close family friend. I am Shirley’s daughter and kept in touch with Virginia through the years. I last spoke to Virginia at Christmas and would like to know where she can be reached. She is very, very special to me. Thank you so much for your help in this matter.... Full story
Much is written in the Village News about challenges in Fallbrook’s public elementary schools. This letter is about the excellent educational opportunities available at Fallbrook’s private elementary schools. My husband and I sent our daughter, Madeleine, to Zion Lutheran Preschool last year and we’re thrilled with the result. We’ve prioritized our personal spending to send her to Zion Lutheran for kindergarten as well. At $5,000 per year, tuition cost is about average by private school standards, and the payback has been en... Full story
I know many Fallbrook people remember a longtime musical band named The Legendary Belair Boys who did the ’50s and ’60s vintage rock and roll. They made a name for themselves a long time ago and still are requested. As of June 21 the group will be celebrating 30 years in San Diego County and have no plans of slowing down. Those who do remember them will remember them when they played for two years in Fallbrook at the Valley Fort Steakhouse/Red Dog Saloon (presently called Cask ’n Cleaver), and special theme days at Ron’s...

What comes to mind when you think of the word “missionary?” Maybe an earnest-looking person feeding an emaciated child in Africa, or a group of teens pounding nails into the particleboard walls of a Mexican orphanage. Missions can be this and much more. “It is what we are about as people of God,” said Pastor Mark Johnson of Christ The King Lutheran Church. “Mission work calls you out of yourself. Jesus came to us. He stepped over into our lives and He calls us to do the same.” Christ The King Lutheran Church has invited sev...
FALLBROOK — Dave Breeding of Fallbrook was the fortunate winner of the 2006 Boys & Girls Clubs of North County Annual Car Opportunity Drawing. The Boys & Girls Club, in conjunction with the Fallbrook Rotary and the Village Rotary, organized the 2006 Car Opportunity Drawing to benefit all three organizations. Each group began selling tickets in early March and worked diligently to sell their tickets. The winning ticket was drawn by Arlyne Ingold, community philanthropist and title sponsor for the Car Opportunity Drawing, at t...
CAMP PENDLETON — The Fallbrook voters passed a school bond called Proposition X in November 2002 for $32 million. Funds have been used to modernize the schools within the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, including San Onofre School and Mary Fay Pendleton, which are two schools of the Fallbrook School District that are located on Camp Pendleton. The groundbreaking ceremony, held June 9, was to celebrate the beginning of construction for a state of the art library/media center at Mary Fay Pendleton School. The new l...
A graduate of Fallbrook High School (FHS) is competing with top landscape companies at the 2006 San Diego County Fair’s flower and garden show. Chris Miller, 21, was very involved in horticulture while attending FHS. Miller sold numerous plants at the plant sales but has found his specialty in creating waterfalls. He has a nursery of his own called CLM Nursery and Landscaping. This year Miller has one waterfall that he created on display at the county fair, with hopes of selling as many as he can. “I am already getting off...
FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook Beautification Alliance (FBA) is pleased to announce local attorney John Crawford will be the emcee for the Grand Tradition Fourth of July fundraiser. Crawford will be announcing the day’s events, most importantly the “Quack-Up Cup” rubber duck race. “It seems appropriate to have a former coast guard officer calling the challenging race,” said Chairman Jackie Edgerton. The FBA has upped the number of ducks to 3,000 this year but Crawford is confident he is up to the task. Crawford retired as...

The County of San Diego’s Historic Site Board has designated the Sickler Brothers Mill in Pala as a historic landmark. The September 19 designation acknowledges the significance of the mill’s contribution to the patterns of the county’s history and cultural heritage, its characteristics of the period, and its potential to yield information important to the county’s early history. The mill is currently within the Wilderness Gardens Preserve, which is owned by the County of San Diego and operated by the county’s Departmen...
Musical clocks chime delightful tunes as guests enter the Howell Gift Gallery in Bonsall’s River Village. The store literally shimmers with its extensive collection of the loveliest of all crystals, Swarovski, which are offered in jewelry as well as sculpture pieces. Jim and Marilyn Howell recently moved their gallery from Encinitas, where they had been in business for thirteen years; however, the couple have called Fallbrook home for twenty-six years. “We chose the location because of the ambiance and the ease of par...
