  • Despite five wins, Miller considers himself unlucky

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

On the 23rd day of the 2010 Del Mar Thoroughbred Club meet, San Luis Rey Downs Thoroughbred Training Center trainer Peter Miller obtained his fifth win of the meet when Winter Camp won the fifth race August 20. Although that made Miller one of only 10 trainers with at least five wins at the meet, he still feels that the meet to that point hadn’t met his expectations. “We’ve been a little unlucky, honestly,” Miller said. “We probably should have eight or nine.” Of the four trainers with exactly five wins as of August 20,...

  • Changes in conventional car care wisdom help one's bottom line

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

LOS ANGELES - The amount of change that has taken place in the last 10 years is phenomenal. Whereas the Internet was largely seen as something to play with a decade ago, it now serves to pay our bills, stay in touch with friends and even order movie tickets or meals. How people treat their vehicles has also changed dramatically. Much of the conventional wisdom preached by fathers and grandfathers with respect to vehicle maintenance has fallen by the wayside in the 21st century, as manufacturers of both vehicles and vehicle...

  • Rose Care FUNdamentals for August

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

The weather this past month has been unusually mild. Many of your rose bushes may still be flush with blooms – mine are, although some of them have experienced sun and heat damage from the blast a week or two ago. This month could still bring back the blast-furnace that we’ve all come to know and love (ha!), so it’s important to allow our roses to enter a short summer dormant period. It’s easy. Don’t prune or feed during the month of August. This will prevent the roses from putting on tender new growth. We can remove...

  • Get the edge on curb appeal

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

SAN DIEGO COUNTY - For home gardeners, lovely landscape dreams can quickly turn into nightmares if unwanted grass and weeds creep into flowerbeds and gardens. The easiest solution to this common dilemma is a solid, functional edge. Edging forms a barricade against spreading turf grasses and migrating weeds. It also creates clean, neat lines between planting areas and holds mulch in place, which reduces surface evaporation and helps conserve water. When used properly, edging reduces the time and effort needed for landscape... Full story

  • Cultivating relationships key for small business owners

    Updated Aug 26, 2010

SAN DIEGO COUNTY – In the business world, a recession almost always leads to layoffs. While it might seem as though small businesses would suffer most in a recession, that’s not necessarily true. Analysts often note that the smaller the business is, the more capable it may be of surviving a recession. Unlike their larger counterparts that boast a hierarchy of employees and high overhead, small businesses are often more flexible. Also, small businesses tend to have m...
