Three men accused of severely beating a female taxi driver during a robbery near Hemet will ask a judge Friday to reduce their bail. CATHEDRAL CITY - A Cathedral City soldier killed in Afghanistan will be laid to rest in his hometown tomorrow. Army Chief Warrant Officer Suresh Krause, 29, was killed Aug. 16 northeast of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, along with six other U.S. Armed Forces members in a Black Hawk helicopter that crashed while being fired upon by insurgents. INDIO - A judge today granted the city of Rancho Mirage's request for a preliminary injunction that will keep a medical marijuana dispensary closed at least through early next year. The city filed suit against the operator of Rancho Mirage Safe Access Wellness Center on July 10. The dispensary opened at 72067 Highway 111 without a certificate of occupancy, which is required to occupy any structure in the state, and the city's municipal code bans medical marijuana dispensaries, City Attorney Steve Quintanilla said. LA JOLLA - Scientists have discovered the mechanism in fault lines that can increase the magnitude of earthquakes, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography announced today. The study, to be published in Thursday's edition of the journal nature, explains how a reduction in friction in rupturing faults leads to a snowball effect, resulting in events like the magnitude-9.0 quake off Japan in March 2011, according to Scripps.
