  • The cusp of summer – a Scandinavian sojourn

    Nathalie Taylor|Updated Jun 19, 2019

Lagom. According to my cousin Håkan, there is no English equivalent for this Swedish word. Dictionaries attempt to translate, but fall short. The word, as he explained, means something that is "just right" – having no failings whatsoever. That is how I chose to describe my recent journey to the west coast of Sweden and southern Norway. It happened on the cusp of summer – that time of the year where the parks and meadows are alive with color and there is just...

  • Is Fallbrook under attack?

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

Apparently, the draw down of our forces in the Middle East has orphaned so many helicopter squadrons that they have redeployed in the area around Fallbrook - to the point that peace and quiet in our neighborhoods are a thing of the past. One after another, at all hours, they fly overhead shaking windows and making conversations at a normal level impossible. What’s really aggravating is the knowledge that they have plenty of alternative practice areas offshore of Pendleton and desert ranges around Twenty Nine Palms that c...

  • What about other contests?

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

Regarding ‘Miss Fallbrook 2014,’ I am pleased to see that the Soroptimists will be considering the accomplishments of contestants instead of judging by how they look in outfits. I would like to go a step further and propose the idea of having a Ms. Fallbrook contest and seek out the many women of all ages who live in Fallbrook and have accomplished so much in their lives and/or contributed their service to our community. They could share a title with the young women and serve as inspiration for them. There are so many bea... Full story

  • Volunteers hope their efforts are a blessing

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

I would like to recognize the generosity of our local merchants, Albertson’s, Major Market, Fresh & Easy, and Northgate Market who donated refreshments for this year’s 4th Annual School Beautification Day event. This outreach event was held at both Fallbrook High School and Bonsall’s Sullivan Middle School. Joe’s Hardware provided building supplies to refurbish a garden area at Sullivan Middle School. Just over 125 volunteers from Riverview Church in Bonsall and Youth Vision America met on both campuses on Saturday, Aug. 17...

  • Shame on you, McDonalds

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

Well, you won McDonalds. Shame on you for closing down three family businesses that have been here in Fallbrook for over 30 years. To the owner of this franchise: how can you feel good about this? I just want you to know that I will never and I mean never patronize your fast food establishment again and guess what? I also know of several others that feel the same. We know that this won’t hurt your business too much, but we will stand our ground. One of theses days I hope you will feel the same anguish that our three F... Full story

  • Hunter owes Fallbrook another meeting

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

On Thursday night, Aug. 22, my wife and I attended a town hall meeting featuring Duncan Hunter at the Fallbrook library. We, along with our friends, have been looking forward to the event as “democracy in action.” Those in attendance were receptive to Hunter who (like the rest of Congress) takes August to check back with their constituency. As it turned out, the meeting protocol was disappointing and frustrating as was the political dancing by the congressman. For example, there was less than an hour for the Q&A. Hunter tol...

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

I would like to thank the personnel at Fallbrook’s new Max 24 Hour Car Wash for the great service I received. There was something sprayed all over my car that washing wouldn’t touch and they were able to clean it up and it was ready to go in about an hour - all this for a very reasonable price. Thanks again to John and his partner. R. Rose...

  • Fighting cancer with food

    Updated Aug 29, 2013

NORTH COUNTY - Few, if any, families can say they have never had an experience with cancer. Cancer is a potentially deadly disease with no cure. While cancer can be treated effectively, there is no way for men and women to eliminate their risk of developing cancer. Though cancer may strike even the healthiest of persons, there are ways men, women and even children can reduce their risk. One such way is to consume certain foods that researchers feel can reduce cancer risk.... Full story

The county’s Zoning Administrator granted Aqualand Farms an exemption from the limit of allowed specialty animals. The August 15 decision by Zoning Administrator Joe Farace will allow the eventual aquaponics facility to have up to 8,400 fish. The property’s “J” animal designator limited the parcel in the 2100 block of Warmlands Avenue to 25 animals. “The findings can be made,” Farace said. The required findings included consistency with the county’s General Plan, the Bon...
