  • Conflict could be in the cards for Pala, Pechanga

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Two Indian gaming groups made a pre-emptive strike against potential statewide ballot measures that could pit a pair of local competitors – the Pechanga and Pala tribes – against each other in February. Leaders of the Pechanga tribe, which operates one of three casinos targeted in the possible measures, took the offensive long before the Oct. 8 deadline set for proponents to collect nearly 434,000 signatures of registered voters. The measures, if they qualify for the ballot, would seek to overturn gambling agreements or “co...

  • Fallbrook seniors win monthly cribbage match

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Though Jeanne Snoddy of the Oceanside team lead the way by winning all seven games with a skunk, the Fallbrook Senior Center cribbage team made it three wins in a row at the August 23 Senior Challenge. The top four players were all from the Oceanside team; however, on the other end of the ledger, Oceanside had the bottom six players. That included three players (who shall remain nameless) who were not able to come up with one win. With 30 players in the event, the Fallbrook team won 56 games to Oceanside Senior Center...

The Warriors were host to the Point Loma Pointers in their first non-league game. Though the Warrior defense played well, the offense could not take advantage of many chances, so the Warriors lost the game 11-7. • Senses make sense

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Once upon a time, in the Land of Disbelief, came a third argument believers are called to defend: “The reliability of sense perception.” Those opposed to this ideal basically believe they cannot really trust causal relationships (cause and effect) to explain certain aspects of reality (such as the existence of God) because perceptions can’t be trusted. What hogwash! And here’s why… In this Land of Disbelief there lived a misled fellow by name of David Hume. Hume argued that we cannot determine precisely a cause of a particu...

  • God, greatness and the believer

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.” Psalm 145:3 It is a simple enough statement to make: God is great. Scripture is filled with His greatness. Greatness is part of His character, part of His Person, part and parcel of Who and What He is. He can do nothing apart from greatness, for it is His fingerprint, and all He does is alive with it. But to define greatness in such a short space is difficult, so I will try to define greatness by considering what it is not: namely, mediocrity, whi... Full story

  • Contractor reels in 'really big fish'

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Fallbrook residents Dennis Deuling, of D. Deuling Construction, and Lisa Sartorius recently enjoyed a family reunion in Ixtapa, Mexico. At one point, they and several other family members chartered a fishing boat and set out for the open waters. After three hours of nothing but pervasive seasickness, the boat turned around and headed for shore. Trolling all the way back to the marina, it was about an hour out with land in sight when one big sailfish hit the line. Sartorius and her daughter-in-law took turns battling...

  • We are looking for a member of our family

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Topper, a sorrel quarter horse gelding, came into our lives when our daughter was just 3 years old. He was the joy of her life. She probably spent years on his back learning to ride and doing all the fun things a young girl and her horse do as they grow up. When she went off to college out of state, it made sense to look for a home where he could be ridden and loved by another young person. A trainer friend of ours found a home with a handicapped child, so we placed Topper there with the understanding that if they ever did... Full story

  • Socialist ideologists just don't get it

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

The Federal Reserve has injected (loaned) dollars to provide liquidity for our economic system. That is not a bailout of corporations. It has nothing to do with businesses directly but provides funds to banking institutions that will be expected to make loans to corporations as needed. The low liquidity was a result of a “drying up” of loan money because of the implosion of the market for sub-prime mortgages made during the time when interest rates were low (the Fed kept the discount rate too low for too long). Those lenders...

  • This week in the news

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Sometimes the headlines say it all. Here is a sampling from recent weeks. “A More Pessimistic Report on Iraq,” New York Times; “Iraq violence casts doubt on US ‘surge,’” Guardian Unlimited; “US widens Iraq war fraud inquiry,” Houston Chronicle; “Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast struggling 2 years later,” CNN; “Record Number of Americans Lack Health Insurance,” Forbes; “Congressmen promise action on China safety scares,” Reuters; “Existing-Home Sales Fall to 5-Year Low,” New York Times; “House prices suffer worst fall in index...

  • Who created this quagmire in Iraq?

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Bob Hahn raised the question of who is responsible for the quagmire in Iraq, assuring us it is not the fault of George W. Bush. I agree somewhat with him. Such a weak, incompetent and insignificant man as Mr. Bush could not possibly have created the greatest catastrophe in American history all by himself. It is not possible for one man, great or small, to plunge the whole world into such darkness and evil as now burgeons. Even Adolph Hitler was not responsible for all the evils of World War II. Bush, like Hitler, needed help... Full story

  • What we really need to do in Iraq

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

It was recently announced in Jerusalem that the United States was offering Israel $30 billion in military aid. The article went onto add that the US was also offering the Sunni government of Saudi Arabia an increase in military aid – though it didn’t say how much. If this was supposed to show that the US was even-handed in the matter of military aid, it failed miserably. Everyone knows that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an American puppet and is certainly no friend to the mass of the Muslim world. What the US really nee... Full story
