  • Re: Nobody can live without water [Village News, 9/2/10]

    Updated Sep 16, 2010

The directors of FPUD have had to raise rates because the cost of wholesale water to FPUD was increased. We have only so much money for reserves. This year we will spend $11.5 million to buy water and we have allocated about $79,000 to hold down rates. We are like your corner gas station owner; he buys from a supplier and passes on rate increases too. One of the few areas over which we have total control is employee expenses. We have held down costs by not increasing the total cost of employee salary and fringe benefits for...

  • Dick O'Brien: a great and good man

    Updated Sep 16, 2010

Dick’s 80-year life was memorialized on Sept. 4. His Navy career, his alcohol abuse educational programs, his photojournalism and his unquenchable thirst for learning were all cited in his service. A Navy color guard, young corpsmen in immaculate white uniforms, provided a final Navy farewell. But Dick, they missed something. Here is the missing Irish blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we m...

What a great sign at the corner of South Mission Road and Clemmens Lane at the Del Rey Avocado corner showing the way to “Historical Fallbrook;” kudos to those who designed it. Now, please remove the eye sore of a sign on the side of a building in the 1400 block of South Mission Road that reads to all those entering Fallbrook on Mission Road and Almond Street “TATOOS.” I can’t believe the building owner and Fallbrook Community Planning Group would allow such a thing. Marsha Maynard...

  • Girls JV tennis team avenges loss from last season

    Updated Sep 16, 2010

FALLBROOK - In their pre-game meeting, the Fallbrook High School girls junior varsity tennis team couldn’t agree if they’d lost last year to San Diego tennis powerhouse, Cathedral Catholic High School, by a score of 14-4, or 15-3. They vowed to do their best to not let it happen again, and riding on their success the prior week’s 15-3 domination over Valley Center, they put words to action and came away with a win,...
