    SAN DIEGO - The principal of Escondido High School released a statement condemning the use of a racial slur by a group of students at a senior picnic. A photo surfaced on Instagram Thursday of a group of nine students with lettered t-shirts spelling a racial slur, plainly known as the "n-word.'' Escondido High traditionally lets students wear lettered shirts to spell out pre-approved words with their friends for a senior photo, but nothing stops students from spelling out different words after the official photo is taken.... Full story

  • Water authority halts development of a desal plant at Camp Pendleton

    SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County Water Authority announced it will cease work on a seawater desalination plant at Camp Pendleton because of excessive permitting and cost hurdles by the State Lands Commission. The Water Authority's Board of Directors approved a $4.05 million contract to develop the desalination pilot facility in 2015, with additional funding from state and federal agencies.     RAINBOW - According to reports from the scene, two cars collided just south of the Rainbow Valley Road exit around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 on northbound Interstate 15, causing one of the cars to catch fire under the hood and later engulfing the entire car.     SAN DIEGO - The San Diego-based Institute for Public Strategies warned parents that although prescription drug use among adolescents is on the decline overall, Xanax use among teenagers is rising. Xanax is a sedative commonly prescribed to treat anxiety or insomnia and belongs, along with Valium and Klonopin, to a classification of drugs known as benzodiazepines.   • SDG&E bills to reduce as San Onofre closure settlement takes effect

    SAN DIEGO - San Diego Gas & Electric bills are expected to decrease next month due to a settlement involving the closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the utility announced on Monday, Sept. 24. SDG&E sought the approval of the California Public Utilities Commission to push the reductions up a month from November, when they were originally set to take effect.
