She was awarded Best Machine Quilter of small quilts in 2002 and 2004 at the Glendale Quilt Show. Ann will entertain us with her lecture “Why am I Buying Broccoli When All I Want to do is Quilt?” Quilters have traditionally been an industrious and creative lot, but modern conveniences and technology have somehow caused us to lose the...

After many speculations and criticisms were expressed toward the Rainbow Municipal Water District (RMWD) by those involved or observing the district in the first part of this series, the discussion continued and the likely exit of General Manager Greg Ensminger was confirmed. Part two of the series will take a closer look at what happened, the employees’ perspectives and where the district might be heading. Ensminger has permanently left his current position as general manager of RMWD, confirmed Larry Sundram, RMWD board p...
Julie Reeder’s sloppy op-ed opens with a factual inaccuracy and deteriorates into increasingly fuzzy, unsupported generalizations, none of them sourced, most of them finger pointing directed at local and state government, “black leaders,” the media and finally the victims themselves out of which pops her thoroughly non sequitur and rather hypocritical conclusion that “finger pointing is ridiculous.” The op-ed is kicked off with a vivid yet totally fabricated story where Bush is on the scene in New Orleans 24 hours before Ka...
I thought my editorial last week was anything but fuzzy, but I spent some time responding anyway. Here’s the reference for my “factually challenged” story about Air Force One. You say all “credible news sources” report Bush wasn’t in New Orleans until…. I heard the story from the Mayor himself in a CNN interview. But, here it’s in print for you. Keep in mind that if the evacuation effort would have happened, it is likely that no one would have died. Mayor slams Blanco for stalling by James G. Lakely, THE WASHINGTON TIME...
As a black American, let me say how much I agree with your editorial. The concept of “Black Leaders” is racial on its face. We did not have “White Leaders” telling their followers to leave town. I am not a dependent of America, I am a citizen. Therefore, as a citizen the first line of defense is myself, not the mayor, governor or president. However, if I were a liberal black person I would sit in the rain and wait until “Master” told me it was safe to come in out of the cold. Liberals (black and white) think of themselves as...
I have lived in the beautiful Fallbrook area for three years and we purchased our property in the year 2000. I have always loved the beautiful birds and the coyotes. Their sounds are a part of the charm of the rough terrain in which they exist. Now the sounds are gone and it leaves an empty space in my heart. Someone is killing off the coyotes. My dog always sat by the fence on our property and waited for the coyotes to walk by and they would play a game that only they understood and which was interesting to watch. When the...
Congratulations to Julie Reeder for a reasoned editorial in the September 8 Village News. It seems to me that she has grasped the reality of what occurred after the hurricane very correctly. The Bush-haters will complain bitterly about his failures. Isn’t it nice that they are so smart with the benefit of hindsight? And also, isn’t it nice that they now have something new to complain about instead of repeating their old complaints over and over again?...
To add to Jim Watters’ riposte to “Typical of the left, poor Cindy Sheehan,” there was never any credible evidence of “WMD” or a connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, and that therefore the entire world (except the USA) knew that all of this was a despicable fraud. So, as a patriotic American and a fairly conservative Catholic, I know that the invasion of Iraq was both immoral and illegal and that therefore George W. Bush is nothing short of a war criminal. But I also believe that, now that the USA is in Iraq, it...
I was shocked to hear from D.J. Cooper (9/8/05) about the “two distinct factions within the staff” of Fallbrook High School: “those who look like they store their sad excuses for clothes in the glove compartment of their cars” and those “who dress professionally and set good examples for their students.” It’s funny, but I’ve been a member of this staff for 17 years and I’m having a hard time figuring out who you are talking about. Since I’ve been on campus just about every school day for the past 17 years, I’m wonderin... Full story
In response to the letter written by Jacqueline Develle (8/25/05), I’d just like to comment. Long before there was a Camp Pendleton, there was a Fallbrook, a nice little town through which the “highway” went if you wanted to go from San Diego to Los Angeles by way of Riverside and the Inland Empire. Yes, right through Escondido, through Vista and through Fallbrook and Rainbow. No one asked if it would disturb anyone if a Marine Corps Base was established to the west. They just moved right in and started operating. Helic...
I have read part one of Ms. Lisa Harpole’s article on the “Troubled waters at Rainbow” and congratulate the Village News staff for reporting events which have driven Rainbow MWD to the present state of turbulence. Ms. Harpole’s investigative research and article will help the preponderance of Rainbow ratepayers understand why Rainbow has “earned” the dirty water syndrome. Mr. Ensminger, the recently displaced general manager, did make a number of attempts to rehabilitate the aging infrastructure but was constrained... Full story
One more bird that tested positive for West Nile virus was found in Fallbrook and others were found throughout the county, prompting an aerial surveillance. “The Vector Control program is now taking to the air to detect mosquito-breeding sites,” said Gary Erbeck, director of the County Department of Environmental Health. “…We conducted aerial surveys of Fallbrook, El Cajon and Alpine using the sheriff’s helicopter. We identified numerous ponds and backyard swimming pools that are likely breeding mosquitoes, which we will i...
