In connection with the construction there was an incident last week where traffic was stopped for approximately fifteen minutes on South Mission Road heading into Fallbrook, but Heidi Holmes, resident project engineer for the Mission Road expansion project, said it was an emergency situation and is not something that residents need to be concerned about. “They w...

On Monday, August 29, at 3:00 a.m., 40-foot waves were lashing southern Louisiana. The 17th Street Canal floodwall north of New Orleans was breached about that same hour. Hurricane Katrina made landfall at 6:10 a.m. as a “strong” category four, with 150-mph winds. Bush was still sleeping at his ranch in Crawford. He would depart Waco a few hours later, heading for San Diego. Mid-morning, Scott McClelland advised the press that FEMA Chief Mike Brown had briefed the President on Katrina via video conference. Bush touched dow...
Do you want to talk about disrespecting the troops, Mr. Watters? Cindy Sheehan has called the men who killed her son “freedom fighters.” Cindy Sheehan wants the sacrifices made so far to be for nothing by pulling out before the job is complete. Cindy Sheehan spoke at a rally in support of convicted terrorist supporter Lynne Stewart. Cindy Sheehan set up her base of operations in Texas at the “Crawford Peace House,” an organization run by an Iraqi-American Baathist supporter of Saddam Hussein. Cindy Sheehan draws a lot of... The Gregory Canyon landfill proposal on the banks of the San Luis Rey River is fatally flawed. It’s a public health hazard and a natural and cultural resource disaster. What fool would ever site a garbage dump at the base of a sacred mountain on top of a major regional aquifer, a freshwater resource 200,000 citizens drink from? In fact, it was unanimously shot down in three successive county landfill studies. Of 100 sites studied, it scored among the worst. Then, with moribund public officials standing like deer caught in hea... Full story
Dear Bob, Thank you for your letter. As someone who is usually classified as a liberal, at least I have voted that way for the last 15 years or so, I have been agonizing over responsibility. Thanks to your clarification, I now accept full personal responsibility for the disaster. It is my fault citizens didn’t have the means to leave. It is my fault the mayor of New Orleans didn’t get all those school buses out of the yard so they could be used to pick them up. Sorry, but I forgot to call. I take responsibility for the tar...
One stone or one hammer? The old saying “When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail” certainly applies to Vernon Tritchka’s ongoing attempts to slander the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Following the logic of Mr. Tritchka — because John of the Cross was once persecuted and imprisoned by the Church (and there are documents to prove it!) we should continue to reference those historical documents and condemn St. John. After all, historical Church documents appear to be the only hammer in the reactionary’s t...
I am writing regarding the 8/25/05 letter from Jacqueline Develle (about air pollution and noise from Camp Pendleton). When we bought our Fallbrook home in 2000, as buyers, we were required to sign a disclosure advisement re: Camp Pendleton, Fallbrook Air Park, Highway 76 widening, Rosemary Mountain, San Onofre, Rainbow Water and others. Was Develle not required to do the same? If not, someone dropped the ball when selling to her. And in this day of the frivolous filing of lawsuits, that “omission” is rather dou...

“A diva of the piano,” raved The Salt Lake City Tribune. The Plain Dealer in Cleveland lauded her as “a mesmerizing risk-taker.” And many other reviews call Ukranian-born Marina Lomazov “simply spectacular.” Marina Lomazov has established herself as one of the most passionate and charismatic performers on the concert scene today. It’s the beginning of cold season, and although you can’t stop children from getting sick there are simple things you can do — at home, at work or at a daycare center — to keep disease from spreading. Colds are caused by viruses. Influenza is a bad cold with more fever and muscle aches. Colds are usually not serious. Healthy children average six colds a year, and between five and ten percent of children develop a bacterial complication (ear or sinus infection). Wiping your nose is something you were supposed to outgrow... Full story
Although many doctors advise against sun exposure, some scientists believe that the benefits of Vitamin D from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays outweigh the risks of skin cancer from the sun’s UV rays. SPIE, the international society for optical engineering, explored that possibility during its 50th annual meeting in San Diego. The August 1 presentations included a panel on Vitamin D effects that addressed the impacts of obtaining Vitamin D naturally from the sun. The panel was moderated by Dr. Michael G. Kimlin of the...
