  • Deliberately blind or deliberately deceptive?

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

In the world of extreme politics we sometimes encounter the blindest: those who will not see. We generally tend to steer clear of such people. We also encounter those who know the truth but choose to pervert it because they cannot bring themselves to admit they have been wrong, or because it will diminish their sense of power. In his letter entitled “None are so blind as those who won’t see” (0/7/06), Glen Holzhausen listed the number of American troops killed in action in the Bush war as 300, a figure off by a factor of ov... Full story

  • Candidate Forum important

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

I would like to personally thank the Fallbrook Democratic Club for sponsoring the Candidate Forum of the Fallbrook Union High School District Board of Trustees, which was held at FPUD on Thursday, September 7. Approximately 100 people were in attendance to hear the candidates give opening statements and respond to pre-determined questions with imposed time limits. In my opinion, this event was well organized, and it covered important issues, which the residents of Fallbrook need to be made aware of concerning Fallbrook High... Full story

  • There is an angel in Fallbrook

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

I’m writing this letter to say there are still angels in Fallbrook. On Monday, September 11, I was stopped at the Main Street Gas Station to get air in my tires, a chore I had put off much to long. I was getting ready to put my four quarters in the slot when this young girl by the name of Lisa Mares pulled alongside of me and asked if I needed some help. Since this was not one of my favorite chores, I found myself saying yes, and Lisa, a perfect stranger, filled my tires with air, even though she was one her way to work. I s... Full story

  • RE: 'New airport discussed

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

I didn’t see the two original articles/letters (Meyers and Russell), but in response to Robert Green: Has he not read or does he not understand the ballot language? And, has he not read or heard that the Airport Authority has stated that “joint use will not work?” With that said, it’s obvious that if it will not work, that does mean kicking the Marines out. How much simpler can it get?! While construction was a short boost to the economy in Denver, Aviation Systems Research Corp has estimated the cost to the Denver economy...

  • RE: 'Empty boots of fallen heroes'

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for thought that went into this article (by Nathalie Taylor). This was so nice. The pictures are amazing. I am skeptical about media and the tact that they have, but you have truly done these Marines justice and our families justice. I cried when I read the article; it touched me. I could feel the emotions all over again that I felt that day. It was as if I was there again. I thank you for capturing this emotion so your readers can feel it as well. Thank you again. Darinda...

  • What a great idea for Hwy 76

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

A beautiful “scenic” California Highway where drivers can take in the sights and smells of the 600 daily dump truck trips along with the residual trash that escapes from the beat-up trucks — of course, getting stuck behind a fully loaded dump truck as it tries to navigate Highway 76 will allow drivers and passengers plenty of time to soak in the scenic wonders of North San Diego County. Jon Klippel...

  • We finally found a great petting zoo, market

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

This weekend my family saw an ad in the Village News about a farmer’s market/petting zoo in Rainbow. I thought it was the one by The Oaks of Rainbow and the nearby mini market. We got out of the car and looked at all the vendors, antiques, etc. We couldn’t find the petting zoo, so we went into the market. Being a Fallbrook resident for over 35 years and proud to live where anyone and everyone is willing to help you find anything you need to find, I was surprised to learn that was not the case at the mini market that day. I a...

Mizell, owner of Killer Pizza from Mars in the Albertson’s shopping center, was in New York City on September 11, 2001, and has returned every year since then. “I don’t know why it hit me so hard,” he mused. “I think it was because… when it happened I didn’t run down there to help. I cowered in my hotel. I think I felt guilty about that. I should have run down to help.” Every year he stays in Room 3402 at the Marriott Hotel. “They always b...

  • Information presented by Farm Bureau

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

BONSALL — Eric Larson, executive director of the San Diego Farm Bureau, recently spoke to Bonsall Rotary and amazed his audience with information on San Diego County agriculture. The Farm Bureau is a nonprofit organization supported by farmers that acts as its advocate where needed: state legislature, local governmental issues, environment concerns and water, for instance. He was a man of many statistics (very illuminating), including the following: • There are 250,000 acres in cultivation in the county with 5,500 farms (65...

  • LAFCO discusses conditioning incorporation upon tax approval

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

LAFCO, which stands for Local Agency Formation Commission and has jurisdiction over cityhood incorporations, can likely condition approval of an incorporation proposal upon approval of a general tax. “I think it provides us with a tool that we haven’t had before,” said San Diego LAFCO board chair Andy Vanderlaan. An information item presented at San Diego LAFCO’s September 11 board meeting cited an August 11 Attorney General’s opinion. An Attorney General’s opinion is not binding upon the courts in the event of a legal chall...

  • Friends and family celebrated in 'Keeping Good Company' cookbook, Part II

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

Last week was Part One of the fascinating story of Roxie Kelley, author of several cookbooks including “Keeping Good Company” I received for a birthday present from my sister Carol. We left off at the point where Roxie and Shelly Reeves Smith, her illustrating partner, had published their first book, “Just a Matter of Thyme,” and sold nearly 30,000 copies! They were unknown, unpublished and unprepared for the deluge of requests for “your next book.” Intuitively they requested and received favorite recipes from retailers w...

  • Eat great BBQ before the Warrior 'home games!'

    Updated Sep 22, 2006

The applause and shouts emanating from the cheering section at the Fallbrook Union High School playing field are directed toward the JV football team, not the cooks who prepared delicious tri-tip steaks for the FFA barbeque. However, the FFA students, some of their parents and FUHS faculty members deserve applause and cheers for preparing a delicious meal to be enjoyed prior to attending each ‘home’ varsity football game. The wonderful smoky scent in the air is evidence that the tri-tips are cooking. Large student-made smoker...
