  • Guest Editorial : Fire tax controversy?

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

During the first hours of last year’s Rice Canyon Fire there were only 15 engines on the Rice Canyon Fire. Dozens more were needed, but they were not available. It takes huge amounts of resources to fight Mother Nature’s fury when wildland fires start! Please vote “yes” for the fire tax initiative on November’s General Election Ballot. The North County Fire Protection District’s (NCFPD) share of the new fire tax will be about $500,000 annually for 30 years. That’s one-half of all the money collected in the district and... Full story

  • FPUD ratepayers be aware

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

In 2006 I sent a letter to the FPUD board c/o Keith Battle attempting to raise issues about increasing water rates and fees. I also questioned why there was no discount for qualified low-income seniors like SDG&E and the phone company provides. The general manager, Keith Lewinger, intercepted my letter, called me and said they could not give seniors a discount without charging other ratepayers more. In June, I had a letter in the North County Times in which I tried to stimulate ratepayers to attend the June 23 meeting, which... Full story

  • Privatized profits, socialized risk

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

Reagan’s most feared words were, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” What happened to Republicans and the Conservative movement? It’s been taken over by greedy, unethical, self-serving, un-American and unpatriotic individuals claiming to be Republicans and Conservatives but really have very little to do with traditional conservatism. Last week we saw the Bush administration put taxpayers on the hook for as much as $2 trillion to bail out Wall Street. Where is the money to bail out those families that are facing...

  • Please join FUHS PTA

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

Don’t the children of Fallbrook deserve the same or better education than we received in school? The real value of being a volunteer and a PTA member is the steadfast focus on what is right for all children, both in education and community. While the PTA may be best known for fundraising within a given school and providing “milk and cookies,” that is not where its greatest benefit rests. Some of the greatest contributions to our educational system have been in the legislation that PTA has initiated and pushed through to law....

She founded the Save Our Forest organization and she and her volunteers have planted over 6,500 trees and shrubs around Fallbrook. Jackie is a skilled leader....

  • McCain's judgment gets worse

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

The Wall Street meltdown is a wake-up call for any voter considering a McCain presidency. Failed banks and investment giants are the same ones that Bush and McCain wanted us to “invest” in under the Social Security Privatization Act of 2006, which McCain supported and voted for and from which financial firms stood to gain billions of dollars in fees. In 1998, McCain voted twice to replace Social Security’s guaranteed benefits with income from risk-based private investments. A centerpiece of McCain’s 2000 presidential bid was...

  • Heyneman for Planning Group

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

When we initially established our home in Fallbrook, the first name to come to our attention was Jackie Heyneman. Since then we have observed her active participation in countless efforts to benefit the community development, environmental problems, area beautification and sensible planning. Jackie is a logical choice to be a member of the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. Barbara Lois Weir...

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

I am delighted to learn that Jean Dooley is seeking a position on the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. Jean is a tireless and devoted volunteer of several community projects, far too many to mention here. I personally have worked with her at the Angel Shop and know of her ability to work within a group and effectively lead others. This is an individual who truly cares about the future of Fallbrook. We owe it to ourselves to elect her. Jean stands for everything that is good about our friendly village. Judy...

  • Let the Democrats run the country

    Updated Sep 25, 2008

Reagan’s words: “Ask yourself, ‘Am I better off today than eight years ago?’” Since 2001, unemployment went from 4.6 percent to 6.1 percent and will hit seven percent soon. Three years of Clinton surpluses and economic growth went to seven years of deficits. Twenty-two million job creations under Clinton went to only five million under Bush. National debt went from $5 trillion to $10 trillion. That will haunt your children and your grandchildren for decades. Gasoline went from $2 to almost $5. The dollar is at the lowest po... Full story
