  • A glimpse into the past – Farming Tools

    Updated Oct 11, 2016

Jack Story Special to the Village News If you should be heading up Rockycrest Road going west and should look just inside the fence line to your left on the Fallbrook Museum Property, you will see a long row of antique (mostly horse drawn) farm equipment. A lot of this was gathered up years ago by board member Clyde Hunter, and came off the Fox and White property near Live Oak Park. For many years it was displayed at the Cultural Center on Brandon Street. When there became enough room on the museum grounds, I personally moved...

An incoming ninth-grader is able to show livestock at the San Diego County Fair as a Future Farmers of America member, and Delana Sehnert utilized that opportunity this year. Sehnert's first county fair as an FFA member included FFA reserve champion honors for both market goats and market hogs, and she was also given the market goat supreme reserve champion honor. • Roses need lots of care in dry, hot weather

    Updated Oct 11, 2016

The recent brief shower didn't bring relief from the high temperatures and dry Santa Ana winds for either humans or plants. Fall is finally here? Doesn't feel like it. The outlook is for high temps and maybe even triple digits. Last month I gave illustrations and descriptions for mid-season pruning with a suggested timeline for pruning and restarting your feeding program. What may not have been clear is that this is a light pruning, and must be carefully calibrated with the we...

  • Thinking about health: Insurance premiums will be up next year

    Updated Oct 11, 2016

Recently I got a note from a reader of these columns who lives in Warren, Ohio. He had seen conflicting reports about next year’s insurance premiums. The man was skeptical of an article he had read, which reported that insurance premiums are cheaper than they were in 2010, and that the Affordable Care Act will cost $2.6 trillion less than estimated. Somehow that didn’t compute with what he had read about premiums going up. He was right to be skeptical, and his comments are important because they zoom right in on the spin tha... Full story

  • Warrior girls split first two league golf matches while improving team score

    Updated Oct 11, 2016

The team score in a high school golf match is derived by adding the five lowest individual scores of a school's six golfers. A golf team has no control over its opponent's score, so even in a loss a team's coach may be happy with the players' performances. This is the case with the Fallbrook High School golf team coached by Neil Medlock. "The girls are working hard and try to do the best they can and improve with each round," Medlock said. Fallbrook entered league competition with a 1-7 record, although Medlock notes that...
