  • The big nothing

    Updated Oct 16, 2008

I don’t think there is anything more disturbing than the big nothing. The Big Nothing is just that – nothing. Nothing you can do about it, nothing that can be said. No ax to grind, no explanation worthy of the void. The big nothing boils down to anything we can’t control. Your teenager comes home and mutters the word, “pregnant.” The one you love walks away. Your children fall away from faith. Suddenly you are unemployed. A doctor says one earth-shattering word: “cancer.” You face foreclosure. Banks hit you with ungodly...

  • When a community comes together

    Updated Oct 16, 2008

I’m sure, by now, most of you have come to know the name Jacob Robinson, the young man from our community who suffered a severely broken back in a car accident a few weeks ago. It is powerful when a community comes together. In the book of Acts, Jesus told his disciples to “wait” for the coming power of the Holy Spirit. All o... Full story

The firestorm, dubbed the Juliet Fire, consumed 3,900 acres on Camp Pendleton, butted up to the Fallbrook border at one point and deftly triggered memories of what happened almost exactly one year ago.
