Roy Hillman Sheridan, 72, of Fallbrook passed away peacefully on October 6, 2008. He retired to Fallbrook in 1995 after a 30-year career at LAC+USC Medical Center, where he worked his way up the ladder from a steamfitter apprentice to Building Craft Manager II. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, who was at his side for 51 years. His children, Michael Sheridan of Huntington Beach, Carrie Sheridan of Fallbrook, and Shelley Beetler of Corona, will remember him with love....
Bless my sister Carol. She continues to find wonderful food people and convinces them to share their secrets. Such is the case of AngelaTuley of Angel’s All-occasion Catering. Carol and Angela met at a political function Angela catered in the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks area near Camdenton, my sister’s hometown. Carol loved her food, told her about Fallbrook and The Village News and next thing I knew, I met Angela by phone and felt she had much to share with anyone who loves food…and maybe even a few persons in the area...
How can we thank the students of FUHS and the community of Fallbrook for all the love and support they have shown our family in these past few weeks? I think of all those people in fancy neighborhoods who don’t know their neighbors and send expensive flowers to “fulfill their duties.” Our family is so blessed to have people in our lives and Jake’s who truly care and have a very hands-on approach. The caring and compassion we have felt is unbelievable. As parents, you raise your son to open the door for a woman and the eld... Full story
I took my grandson’s 2006 American-made car to a local “Mr. Fix-It” to have the rumble-mumble in the front end assessed. Steve at Scrappy’s took the car for a run and then spent the rest of a half hour with two of his mechanics checking everything. In view of the 100,000-mile warranty, he suggested the car go back to the American car dealership. Thank you to Steve at Scrappy’s. Oh, and he wouldn’t take a dime! And yes, he takes care of our truck and car. Joanne Moore...
Helene Brazier wrote that she had asked the Rainbow Water District board to investigate per diem payments to me, alluding they may be improper. As with any complaint, the district has investigated the payments and reported to all directors. A core paragraph of the interim report regarding my behavior states as follows: “Director Griffiths (was scheduled to and) did attend the SMWC meetings for which he received the per diems, made the requisite reports to the Board of Directors, submitted the appropriate documentation, and h... Has everyone received their “Wildfire Awareness Guide” from the County Emergency Services office? The guide devotes seven of its 12 pages to the 100 feet of defensible space, landscaping and fire-resistant plants. They want to increase our awareness of danger zones and, in my case, it’s worked. I happened to notice one as I sat in traffic on Hwy 76 between Bonsall and North River Road. When I glanced out my windows, I noticed the height and thickness of dead brush on both sides of the highway that appears to be not even...
We received a letter today detailing how, if certain criteria are met during high winds, that SDG&E will cut our power. After all the suffering caused by their lack of line maintenance, by not clearing dead trees away from their transmission lines, now this. SDG&E tells us to make a plan. How do you plan for electricity arbitrarily being cut off for someone who sleeps with a CPAP machine because of sleep apnea or an asthmatic who needs power for a nebulizer? By buying an expensive gas-powered generator? What does SDG&E offer...
This letter shares why the Board of Directors, North County Fire Protection District (NCFPD), supports Proposition A. First, Prop. A creates a countywide joint powers authority (JPA) to improve regional fire services. To address shortcomings identified following recent fires the JPA will purchase, operate and maintain up to 50 additional fire engines. Distributing these engines to local fire agencies will provide ‘boots on the ground’ during the next firestorm. The JPA will add to critical air assets by pur...
My wife Liz and I recently celebrated our second wedding anniversary. We spent the evening in our “barn,” a 1,200-square-foot single-room facility that we built in the back of our property. The barn has become our second home. The idea for the barn came to us six months before our wedding in early 2006. Liz suggested having our wedding ceremony in the barn. Where can you find a contractor who can develop plans, get permits and build this place on time for our wedding? There is only one thing you can count when working wit...
Does anyone remember Proposition 22? Prop 22 added the following section to the California Family Code: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” It passed on March 7, 2000, with 61.4 percent of the vote. Fast forward eight years. On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court finally ruled on legal challenges to Prop 22. With a 4 to 3 vote, they struck down Prop 22. They declared all prohibitions on same sex marriage are unconstitutional. The State of California was ordered to begin pro...
In today’s mad rush with so much bad news, we do not take the time to acknowledge the good things that happen in our lives. Last week I was a patient at Fallbrook Hospital’s outpatient center. The procedure performed was a colonoscopy. The newly remodeled facility is pristine with state-of-the-art equipment. The unit is staffed with highly trained nurses who truly care about the mental and physical comfort of their patients. My physician, Dr. Eastman, is a board certified specialist in his field, professional, efficient and...
I would like to register my support for Brett Stokes and his work. He is a fine artist and should be appreciated for how he expresses himself, not how he blends into a décor. Brett has spent his whole life in Fallbrook and over the years he has painted the way he sees the area from his own perspective. If he had done otherwise, he would not be an artist but a decorator. No offense to decorators but there is a difference. A decorator might coordinate or blend the colors. But an artist expresses what he sees and feels through...
About 15 years ago we moved to Fallbrook and wanted to become involved in this unincorporated, charming town. Before long, we became familiar with the workings of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy. Among the many fine folks we became acquainted with was Jackie Heyneman. We were impressed with her fervor, energy and knowledge of what needed to be done to preserve the town’s precious ambience. Her energy and leadership saw to it that trees were planted and cared for, making the barren areas more lush and green. She was highly i...
Michele Bain will “make a difference” when she is elected to serve on the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. I know her to be devoted to any issue she takes on, whether it is stopping Liberty Quarry or volunteering as secretary for the Sierra Club. She is my friend and she is a person of integrity and I have the greatest respect for her ethics and her determination to give her best effort to anything she does, large or small. Her background in owning a court reporting business will help her on the Planning Group and her des... Full story
I am pleased to write this letter on behalf of Donna Gebhart, who is seeking election to the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. I have known Donna for over 10 years and admire her enthusiasm and dedication to help keep Fallbrook the unique and lovely place it is. Besides being a good friend to many, she is a good listener and she truly cares about our town and its future. Since moving to Fallbrook in 1997, Donna and her husband, Al, have been tireless workers for improving it and its surrounding areas. They have worked on a...
For 12 years my association with Jackie Heyneman and Jean Dooley has been with Fallbrook’s Save Our Forest. You will find no more sincere, knowledgeable and dedicated persons in Fallbrook. Their expertise, in identifying community challenges, offering solutions, will contribute to the mission of the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. Please join me in voting for these two candidates for positions on the FCPG. Howard Dravo Sansom... Full story
Are you one of the few who pay pumping charges at RMWD? Then please vote for Sheri Rumble; she does too, and has promised to fight to get these fees reduced. Most of Fallbrook and Bonsall are not assessed these fees. Sheri is not new to Rainbow. Her father was a director in the 1970s and she grew up listening to the pros and cons of the district. She is managing her parents’ grove and is concerned with water availability and the infrastructural health of the district. She is independent and confident enough to speak up w... Full story
We have been calling Fallbrook our home for the last 15 years. In a community as unique as Fallbrook, it’s so important to keep our environmental problems, community development and beautification plans on track. Steve Smith has been dedicated to keeping Fallbrook green and rural. He is a great neighbor, always active and productive in serving our community in so many ways over the past 32 years. We couldn’t do any better than choosing Steve for the Fallbrook Community Planning Group. Joe and Brenda Kuenem...
Jack Wood and Jackie Heyneman are excellent candidates to fill the openings on the Fallbrook Community Planning Group (FCPG). They spent the last several years serving as appointed members on two FCPG committees each. Longtime FCPG attendee Jackie Heyneman serves on the Land Use and Design Review Committees while on her village rounds: planting and nurturing trees, “Keeping Fallbrook Clean and Green” and numerous other community causes. Jackie has spent 25 years enhancing your quality of life by problem-solving large pro...
