The San Diego County Board of Supervisors certified the speed limits on Olive Hill Road for radar enforcement. The supervisors’ 5-0 vote Oct. 10 ratified an Aug. 3 recommendation of the county’s Traffic Advisory Committee. In addition to endorsing radar enforcement of the 40 mph speed limit from Mission Road to Mile Post 4 (between White Horse Lane and Futurity Lane), the 50 mph speed limit from Mile Post 4 to Morro Hills Road, and the 45 mph speed limit from Olive Hill Road to Morro Hills Road, the TAC had also rec... SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A new shallow-draft Navy ship that is faster than its predecessors arrived at its homeport of San Diego today. The 378-foot USS Fort Worth, named for the Texas city that is the nation's 16th largest, is the Navy's third littoral combat ship. It was commissioned in a ceremony in Galveston, Texas, on Sept. 22. As a littoral combat ship, the Fort Worth can travel in less than 20 feet of water and reach speeds of up to 40 knots in 90 seconds, according to the Navy, which is expected to use the more agile,...
The Fallbrook Union High School District (FUHSD) and Bonsall Unified School District (BUSD) are preparing for the changes that would result if Proposition BB were approved by voters on Nov. 6. Proposition BB, the proposition for unification of the BUSD, was put into motion when the school district petitioned the State Board of Education (SBE) to change the current government structure from separate elementary and high school districts to one unified district to serve grades K-12. In July 2011, the SBE voted to allow the...
In several local governing boards, the number of candidates that have filed for openings exactly match the number of available seats, thus creating non-contested races. Boards that do have multiple candidates vying for an open seat(s) include: Bonsall Union School District Longtime Bonsall Union School District board members Dick Olson and Dr. Sylvia Tucker’s seats are open this year and both have filed to continue their service. They are being challenged by third candidate Eric Ortega. Candidates were asked what they felt t...

Question: When you get sent out of town for a healthcare procedure, is it because: (1) your physician’s medical group makes more money, (2) it’s what you signed up for, or (3) it’s not available locally? Answer, it depends. Usually it’s not #3. Quite often it’s a combination of the first two. Our healthcare system has gotten very complicated and chances are, if you have an HMO your healthcare providers have a capitated payment agreement with them, meaning in part that they send you to contract specialists and facilitie... My heartfelt thanks go to Lt. Robert Haley and Deputy Jim Emig of the Sheriff’s Dept., Jeff Richie and Bob Hill of Edco. They took the complaints of our neighborhood serious and worked to solve the problems. Our neighborhood was overrun with recycle thieves and we have had a rash of vehicle break-ins and property theft. Edco sent out a supervisor several times to talk to these people, but to no avail. The Sheriff became proactive and staked out the area, caught one and hauled her off to the station where she was told she w...
….but not listening will lead any journalist to go astray as, seen in the N.C. Times recently. I watched the entire Presidential debate on Fox while returning to Fallbrook on a cruise ship, but the two writers from AP recorded scenes and sounds far differently than most of us who viewed the same Fox coverage. The reports are in. Even MSNBC and the other biased press saw the same fantastic win by Mitt Romney. Gov. Romney brought to millions of viewers the truth of what Pres. Obama has been desperately selling to those who w... Full story
I just wanted to shout out a big thanks to Murphy & Murphy Realty. Who would know you could sell a house easily, quickly and at the top dollar in this economy? Being first time home sellers, we were nervous, but they put us at ease and walked us through every different process we encountered with true care and attention to detail. A huge caravan of Realtors went through the home the first weekend it was on the market and that’s when they found our buyers! Escrow was smooth and executed in a very timely manner. No surprises e... Full story

I believe it was Tara who worked two or three times on my cheap but much appreciated watch that lasted for many years and I still use because I like it! I see you are closing your shop. Thank you very much for your tedious work getting the watch strap fastened to the watch. You were so kind to do this for me twice. I knew of no one else who did this kind of work. John B. Ginger...
I believe “one man, one vote” and “same day registration” are complete and utter opposites. I believe voter fraud is bad and requesting a photo ID at the polls is good. I believe sending an extremely high ranking representative to speak to black ministers in an effort to convince them that requesting photo IDs is racist is itself racist! Should a man be allowed to place on public display a picture of a symbol you happen to hold dear sitting in a glass of his own urine? As much as I dislike the idea, yes. Should our taxes awar...
As a teacher and long time resident of Fallbrook, I want to express my support for Siegrid Stillman for Fallbrook Union Elementary School District board. Mrs. Stillman has a longstanding record of integrity and service in our community. She is the right person, for the right job, at the right time! Joan McConnell...
Please join me in electing Al Gebhart to Fallbrook Public Utility District Seat 2. I have known and worked with Al for over 14 years. Al has been the president of the Live Oak Park Coalition for over 10 years. Helping keep the County from closing this facility due to a lack of funds, he wrote grants and secured the funding necessary to keep this park open and expand its facilities. As co-chair of the Fallbrook Trails Council, he raised money and organized volunteer labor to develop riding/hiking trails in the Santa Margarita...
I don’t know where Racey gets his disinformation about the top income tax rate in the 1940s. People making $10,000 per year or less paid 25 percent. However, the highest marginal rate was 70 percent. Under Eisenhower, even 91 percent. It was a progressive tax system, based on income. It certainly didn’t hurt the economy. During the ‘50s and ‘60s especially, the economy, middle class, and stock market boomed. Bush/Cheney dropped the rate to 28 percent, then created the deficit with the Iraq War and a host of other things....
The water industry requires leaders with bold vision and the ability to steer away from the conventional wisdom to face the ever changing challenges caused by water shortages, burdensome regulations, and financial constraints. Tony Pack, a 16 year resident of Fallbrook, will be an excellent addition to the FPUD’s board. Pack was the general manager of Eastern Municipal Water District (Eastern), a very innovative agency for 24 years. Under Pack’s leadership, Eastern reduced its dependence on Metropolitan Water District of Sou... Full story
Vote “No” on Prop BB. It is not in the best interest of either Fallbrook or Bonsall students. The establishment of a specialized program in Bonsall will adversely impact the programs and services currently accessible by all students. Bonsall does not plan to offer its students athletics, visual and performing arts, agriculture, or career-technical education courses such as wood, metal, and auto. Instead, it relies on other school districts, such as the Fallbrook Union High School District, to provide these educational options... Full story
On Nov. 6, voters in the Fallbrook Union High School District, which includes Bonsall Union School District, will vote on Proposition BB. A ‘yes’ vote approves the unification of the Bonsall Union School District into a K-12 district allowing the creation of a Bonsall High School, offering another option for all students in the Fallbrook and Bonsall area. Will this raise taxes? The answer is no. There is also no bond issue required. The plan is to have Sullivan Middle School become the high school using a phased-in app...
The primary reason I moved to Bonsall in 2008 was because of the elementary school’s reputation. From personal recommendations by parents, to meeting some of the dedicated teachers, to the State of California’s excellent performance rating, Bonsall Union School District was doing something right. We now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to continue the high level of education for the children of Bonsall and Fallbrook through the secondary level with Prop BB. Prop BB does not raise taxes, but it could raise the value of... Full story
