The story in the Oct. 13 issue about candidates seeking election to the governing board of the Fallbrook Union High School District contained two errors. In the second paragraph, the story correctly states Courtney Hilborn and Jim Dooley are the candidates but misidentified the geographic area they represent. They are in Area 1, but the story stated Area 2. (Area 2 represents most of the Camp Pendleton area and there were no candidates to file for the position.) Also, in the sixth paragraph in responses from Hilborn and... Full story

Re: ‘Adams takes over as Fallbrook Postmaster’ [Village News, 10/13/22] I’m delighted to welcome our new Fallbrook Postmaster, Naomi Adams. I hope she will do well and make sure that no mail goes missing, either being sent out from our PO or being delivered to our homes. In the past I’ve had several items I’ve mailed go missing, never to reach their destination, nor be returned, even with clearly marked return address. What happens to them? I’ve had to re-write checks and ask people who’ve sent me things when they mailed i... Full story
Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News According to ancient lore, Moses trudged up Mount Sinai and returned with the Lord’s word chiseled in stone. Recognized the world over, the Ten Commandments is the first recorded letter and it came from God. Egyptian ruler Ptolemy V had his message chiseled into stone around 196 BC. Although that slab of hieroglyphics wasn’t unearthed until 1799, when troops were building a fort in Rashid (Rosetta) during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. Known as the Rosetta Stone, it is... My sister and I disagreed on abortion. After several lengthy conversations over the years, sans yelling, screaming, and personal attacks I reversed my stance. My brother and I disagreed on the shape of the left/right political diagram. I felt it was an infinite line leading ever further apart leftward and rightward. He felt it was a circle bending up from the bottom (good) toward the top (evil). Over the decades I came to agree with him, the extreme left and extreme right each approaching the disgusting. Fortunately for... Full story

What are Republican legislators doing? At the federal level, as always, they are just saying no: at the state level, they are busy restricting voting by non-Republicans. So, I will ask this: “what legislation have Republican leaders produced that a... Full story

Whenever I leave my Sycamore Ranch neighborhood, turn left onto Gird Road and drive past the lush vineyards of Monserate Winery, several people to whom I’m very grateful come to mind. The first is Teresa Platt who was a leader back in 2015 through 2018, informing Gird Valley residents about two key issues that would forever change this quiet community. The first was the proposed high school at the south end of Gird Road. The second was the vacant land for sale, previously the Fallbrook Golf course, and whether it would be s... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District Fentanyl is taking its deadly toll on our state and nation. According to a recent press release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 5,091 pounds of fentanyl in Imperial and San Diego counties during the first nine months of fiscal year 2022. That’s 60% of the 8,425 pounds seized in the entire country. Drug precursors are typically manufactured in China, then processed in Mexico and smuggled into the U.S. by cartels across our increasingly wide-open southern border. A... Full story
