A small brush fire was burned through an area near Valley Center Friday afternoon, destroying buildings and triggering evacuations before firefighters were able to get it under control. Cal Fire San Diego tweeted just after 1:30 p.m. that crews were battling a six-acre brush fire near Miller and Cole Grade lanes in Valley Center, south of state Route 76. The fire was burning in heavy fuels with a moderate rate of spread soon after it was reported, Cal Fire spokesman Thomas... Full story
SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego State's basketball program has gotten to the point where it's a big deal if the Aztecs don't make the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs failed to live up to their lofty expectations last year. That will provide plenty of motivation as third-year coach Brian Dutcher molds a new-look team that has plenty of experience thanks to three key transfers and could be better than his first team, which did make the NCAA field. "It's not acceptable," Dutcher said of... Full story
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An April trial date was set today for the death-penalty case of a man accused of gunning down a San Diego police officer and wounding his partner in 2016. Jury selection is due to begin April 6 for the trial of Jesse Michael Gomez, 58, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, with a special-circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer. Gomez is accused in the death of Officer Jonathan "J.D." DeGuzman, who was shot about 11 p.m. July 28, 2016, in the 3700 block of Acacia Grove Way. DeGuzman,...
VISTA (CNS) - A professional photographer who sexually assaulted four teenage girls during modeling sessions at a rented Carlsbad residence where he had set up a temporary studio was sentenced to 25 years in state prison today. Robert Koester, 52, pleaded guilty last month to 23 felonies related to raping and inappropriately touching the teens – some of whom were drugged and unconscious during the abuse – as well as creating child pornography of the girls. Koester also faces federal charges locally, as well as charges in his...
A car crashed into a shop in downtown Fallbrook Friday morning. The North County Fire Protection District reported just before 11 a.m. that fire crews were at the scene of the crash, at Fallbrook FroYo on East Mission Road near Main Street. A single shattered shorefront window was the only damage to the shop, which remained open for business on Friday. Traffic was impacted on East Mission Road for a time, but the area was cleared by early Friday afternoon. No one was injured....
The Ramona High School Bulldogs scored early and often to get their homecoming festivities off to a good start Friday, Oct. 18, then cruised to a 48-8 win over the still-winless Fallbrook High School Warriors. After returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Bulldogs never looked back, scoring four more times in the first quarter and tacking on 10 more in the second quarter to take a 45-0 lead at the half. The Bulldogs (1-7, 1-3) scored on one of the two punts they...
Seven small elementary schools in northern San Diego County and southern Riverside County participate in sports tournaments with each school hosting a different sport each month. The 2019-2020 tournaments began Oct. 10 with the Pauma Volleyball Tournament at Pauma Elementary School. Vallecitos Elementary School won both the girls' championship and the boys' championship. The Pauma Volleyball Tournament consisted of round-robin play. All matches were one game to 20 points,... Full story
Two Americans will compete in men’s trap shooting at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and 2007 Fallbrook High School graduate Brian Burrows holds a four-shot lead for the second berth. Burrows finished second in the first Olympic trials match Sept. 10-13 in Kerrville, Texas. His score will carry over to the second and final Olympic trials match in Tucson at the end of February and beginning of March. “Very thankful for being able to shoot as well as I did,” Burrows said. “I just look forward to February.” The initial r...
I have written numerous articles about the housing shortage in California. Over the past four years, the California legislature has proposed bills meant to provide a "fix" to the shortage of housing. Many have gone down in defeat, either as a result of pressure from cities and counties or at the hands of the Appropriations Committee. Recently, five bills, when bundled together, have been passed and were signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. These bills will dramatically change the... Full story
The first Frontier Conference cross-country cluster meet of the 2019 season took place Sept. 18, and Bonsall High School did not have the necessary five girls to obtain a team score. The second cluster meet was held Oct. 10 on the NTC Park at Liberty Station course, and the Bonsall girls took first place not only among Summit League teams but among all Frontier Conference teams. Team cross-country scores are derived by adding the positions of a school’s first five finishers; the sixth and seventh runners are not scored but c...
Daniel Contreras may not have been Fallbrook High's No. 1 runner when the Warriors' cross-country season began, but his ability to fill in as a leader of the team is why head coach Marco Arias nominated the junior for Athlete of the Week. "When I lost my No. 1 runner to injury, he stepped in and became the No. 1 runner for our team," Arias said. "This will make us stronger as we go on into league finals and CIF. "He has emerged as one to watch not only this year but also next...
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors provided support for the reduction of the speed limit on Winter Haven Road between South Mission Road and Brooke Road. A 5-0 vote Wednesday, Oct. 16, approved the introduction and first reading of the ordinance amendment to reduce the speed limit from 45 mph to 40 mph. The second reading and adoption is scheduled for Oct. 30, and that approval would make the new speed limit effective Nov. 29. In order for a speed limit to be enforceable by radar, a speed survey must show that the...
ESCONDIDO – Realtors generally offer a home warranty when their clients buy or sell a house. It can be overwhelming and confusing at first, but here is what homebuyers and sellers need to know about home warranties, what to know before getting one and how it can help sell the property. According to the American Home Shield, a home warranty is “an annual service contract that covers the repair or replacement of important appliances and systems components that break down over time.” Basically, it’s like health insuran... I agree with you 100%. When Chicken Little said the sky is falling, we should take it with a grain of salt before running around screaming hysterically. I don’t know if mankind has any effect on climate change or not, but I am sure if all the “greenhouse” gases emitted by wild land fires, volcanoes and other none human sources were still contaminating the atmosphere, there wouldn’t be any humans here or other animal life for that matter. This planet is remarkably self-healing despite what humans, the dominant species... Full story
In 2004, 67% of San Diego County voters approved a 40-year extension of TransNet, a half-cent sales tax for highway, road and transit projects. Recently, SANDAG proposed making changes to the 2004 ordinance by redirecting funds from several highway projects into mass transit. Since 2004, only 6% of the funds generated by TransNet have been used to build highways, which are used by over 95% of the people, while 66% has been used to construct public transit projects, used by... In the postings from the North County Fire District, one of their comments was that there are not enough funds for them to provide an ambulance service, so they are going to have to bring in a private firm to provide that service. We pay a lot of good money to the Fallbrook Hospital District each year. We don’t have a hospital, so where are those funds going? I am sure there are enough revenues taken in by the District to provide EMTs and the ambulances needed for an effective service. I feel that providing a healthcare r... Full story
In the Oct. 10 issue of the Village News, it printed two articles why the taxpayers need to pay $120 more on their yearly taxes. To be quite honest, I can’t believe they are asking us to pay even more. The economy is bad enough with everything going up and yet they come with their hands out asking for more. You have seniors on fixed incomes, families who are already struggling and military. Living in California is not easy, and this expense makes it even harder. Do the math. Just for an example, let’s say there are 25,... Full story
Imagine that the allowance of a 13-year-old boy gets raised to $200 per week. At first the boy is thankful. After three months, however, he asks for a $25 raise because he wants to donate to Public Broadcasting Service as he truly loves the science program, “NOVA.” His parents think it is admirable so they give it to him. Two months later he asks for a $50 per week raise as he wishes to purchase a series of expensive science books. As an outsider, I say it would be wise for him to cut back on his $70 per week expenditure of... Full story
A few months ago, I toured the Vista Detention Facility and saw firsthand the incredible work being done by the Veterans Moving Forward Program. With over 241,000 veterans residing in the San Diego Region, some veterans have landed in our jails, many of consequences from post-traumatic stress disorder. Last week, the San Diego Board of Supervisors voted to enhance the Veterans Moving Forward program, by expanding the community care coordination for veterans in the Vista jail. A problem we continue to run into in San Diego...
Bowne Xiao The Epoch Times WASHINGTON-Vice President Mike Pence touted America's renewed vision in space under the Trump administration Oct. 21, including the anticipated Moon-to-Mars mission and the creation of a U.S. Space Force, as he repeated a recurring theme in his speech: working with "freedom-loving" nations in space exploration. Speaking to an international audience at the 70th International Astronautical Congress – a global space advocacy organization – Pence rei...
There are many reasons to vote “No” on A. The oversight committee people before and after the election are picked by the taxing agency. The ballot changes which were made after questions were raised of the proposed ballots. But the primary reason has to do with that evil thing, money. What are they going to do with the $20 million? They said they are going to build new buildings and buy equipment. How many? Where? What equipment? In other words, no budget expenditure has been proposed, except in generalities, or in other wor...
