SAN DIEGO - A state appeals court today reversed the felony conviction of a medical marijuana dispensary manager who was found guilty of possessing and selling the drug for profit. Jovan Jackson, 34, was convicted in 2010 and sentenced to six months in jail. Jackson's case will be sent back to San Diego Superior Court, where he could be tried again, unless the state Supreme Co...

  • Re: Are you ready to renounce God? [Letter, Village News, 10-11-12]

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I take exception to Sylvia King’s equating of voting for Obama with renouncing God. She needs to take a serious look at the alternative she’s proposing. For starters, it’s Paul Ryan’s budget plan, not Obama’s, that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops denounced as immoral. Google: “HuffPost: Religious Leaders Condemn Ryan-Romney Budget.” Look at the draconian Personhood plank in the GOP Platform. It would make abortion illegal even in cases of rape, incest, or where the woman’s life is at stake. This idea has been “run u...

  • Vote 'Yes' on Prop BB

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I am writing in support of Proposition BB, which will create a new public high school in Bonsall at no taxpayer cost. With two small children, my wife and I moved to the Fallbrook/Bonsall area because of the family friendly environment and quality elementary school choices. Now we are already examining our choices for high school. When informed about Prop. BB, which creates a new public high school with no new taxes or bonds, the benefits were obvious. The Fallbrook Union High School District has long recognized there was a...

  • Vote Rhyne for Rainbow Water

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I live in Morro Hills, which is in the Rainbow Water District. I am writing in support of my mother-in-law, Maureen Rhyne, who is running for this board of director’s position. Jack Griffiths has already served two terms in this position, and I think that if it works for our presidential elections, a two term limit in this situation would be beneficial for this board also. Maureen Rhyne has been involved politically in the community for over thirty years, and has been attending Rainbow Water District board meetings for as l...

  • Vote Gary Johnson for President

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

Mitt Romney cannot win California, nor any other “blue” state. So we should vote for a constitutional candidate for once by voting for Gary Johnson for president. This will neither hurt Obama nor help Romney. Randy Hartman...

  • Vote Gebhart for FPUD

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I would like to share with residents my knowledge of a candidate for the Fallbrook Public Utility District’s board of directors, Al Gebhart. Al, a businessman here in Fallbrook, is a numbers guy. His business, Gebhart and Associates, is an investment advisory firm. This says it all. His charge is to scrutinize the investment portfolio of his clients and advise them as to what is a good venture. What better background could there be? As a resident of Fallbrook, Al has thrown himself into many activities that have benefited F...

  • Keep dogs protected at night

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

Our sweet dog Abner was killed by coyotes in our backyard early Tuesday morning, October 16. At the Paws in the Park event this year, he won second place in the Most Handsome category. He was a fantastic son and the best big brother for my kids that I could have ever wished for. Please warn your readers to not allow their dogs any access to the outside after dark. For years I thought he was safe in our backyard, but I was wrong. Thank you. Glen McKone...

  • I endorse Stillman for FUESD

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly endorse Siegrid Stillman for the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District Board of Education. I have known Siegrid both personally and professionally for over 30 years. While teaching in our school district, she continually proved herself to be an outstanding educator. She was always ready to do whatever she needed to do to help children be successful learners. Although she was definitely a leader, she was also a good listener and team player. She is now hoping to work as a... Full story

  • Vote 'No' on Prop 32

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

The TV and mail has been overrun by the proponents’ propaganda about Proposition 32. They make this proposal sound like it will benefit all of us and is needed now. This is not true. The proposition is funded by a few big money corporations and individuals who exempt themselves from the bans they place on the regular middle class workers and their unions and organizations. If Prop 32 passes, unions will be prohibited from contributing to state or local candidates, ballot measures, or political parties ever! Unions include org... Full story

  • What is socialism?

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

What I hear from the Democrats is, “Take from the rich and give to the poor. The rich Republicans only care about themselves and don’t want to help anybody else.” A true socialistic country is one where everyone contributes to the pot and everyone enjoys benefits from the pot. This system works very well in small countries like Denmark. Unfortunately, the US does not have the ability to work this way. We have too many people taking from the pot without ever contributing to it. We have generations of families being taugh...

  • Operation Cruel Summer

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

We should be thankful to the Sheriff’s Department in Fallbrook and the detectives and deputies who were instrumental in the arrest of 49 people in September, relating to a drug and weapons trafficking ring. People, this was huge. We, who live in Fallbrook mustn’t become complacent while smelling the flowers, admiring the trees, and basking in our beautiful nature. Danger, violence, drug pushers, and despicable elements are here, whether we like it or not. We don’t want to see Fallbrook go the way of so many cities and towns...

  • Rebuttal to Vote 'No' on Prop BB

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

I would like to set the record straight on some of the points raised by Dale Mitchell in his argument against Prop BB. Why are many eighth graders from both Fallbrook and Bonsall elementary schools choosing not to attend FHS? Here are some facts: Fallbrook Union High School District (FUHSD) is in its third year of program improvement (a program for schools that have not met one or more of its identified achievement targets for at least two years in a row). FUHSD’s Academic Performance Index (API) is 746 on a 1,000 point s... Full story

  • National security matters

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

On October 17, Mitt Romney, in front of the world, stridently accused the President of the United States of omitting/ignoring the term “terrorism” in his initial response to the Benghazi attack. He was summarily corrected and chastised, and the main issue that seems to have emerged appears to be if the moderator in intervening to show that Romney was incorrect was acting in an “unfair manner.” To me, the sole issue is that Romney’s spectrum of conduct on the Libyan issue renders him unequivocally not qualified to be Presid... Full story
