    Updated Oct 28, 2010

FALLBROOK – The theme for Fallbrook’s 29th annual Christmas Parade, scheduled for Sat. evening, Dec. 4, has been chosen by the parade committee. Elaine Carlock’s idea garnered the most votes at the committee meeting a few weeks back. Carlock suggested “’Twas the Parade Before Christmas,” and it was deemed clever enough to be the winner amongst the many entries received by the Chamber of Commerce. Carlock will have the opportunity to ride in a convertible in the parade, which will have the Theme Winner banner carried i...

For years local labor unions they have been getting their handpicked candidates elected to local school, water, fire, and municipal districts. Though many voters don’t pay much attention, labor unions have. In Fallbrook, disgruntled teachers complained about Superintendent Tom Anthony. The Fallbrook teachers union got their three-member slate of candidates elected and were rewarded with a 3-2 vote to give Anthony a $340,000 package, effectively buying his resignation at taxpayer expense. The Vista Unified Teachers A...

  • Teachers and public pension myths

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

Retired Teachers’ Week is November 7 to 13, and I would like to celebrate it with you. Many people seem to think that teachers receive their pensions as a free benefit, when, in fact they pay into their own retirement account. The average teacher paid for more than 26 years and receives $2,700 per month in benefits. Those who retired in the ‘70s or ‘80s receive a far smaller monthly benefit. Most do not receive medical benefits following retirement. Unlike corporate workers, teachers are required to contribute to their pensio...

  • Grape harvest thank you

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

As many of you know, at long last, it is grape harvest time here in Fallbrook. We would like to thank all of our friends who helped us harvest our wine grapes. Your spirit, hard work, and friendship are so very much appreciated. Clearly, Fallbrook wine and Fallbrook as a wine destination are going to challenge places like Napa in the next decade as word spreads about the wonderful wines made from Fallbrook grown grapes. Most of all, we’d like to thank our wine maker Mike Hoffman of Live Oak Vineyard for his guidance, wine m... Full story

My name is Rick Williams and many of you know me as the owner of Fallbrook Window Washing Company. Recently, a friend and current customer informed me that someone is fraudulently claiming to work for Fallbrook Window Washing Company in order to secure work for himself by misleading people and unlawfully abusing my good name and reputation in town. This person is tall, approximately 30 years of age, and has full tattoo sleeves on both arms. At the completion of a job, he asks the customer to make the check out in his name.... Full story

  • Parents need to set an example at FUHS

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

I am amazed at the selfishness, lawlessness, and lack of concern for safety displayed by parents when dropping off/picking up students at Fallbrook High. Some parents get in line and park all along the red curb on Stagecoach to pick kids up in front of the school, instead of following the rules and using the designated safe waiting area in the parking lot. This causes a backup of vehicles along Mission Road because other drivers don’t know if there is a big gap in traffic in front of them, some choose to break the law, i... Full story

  • Nov. 2 last chance to submit SR76 comments

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

The SR76 Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) Executive Summary is not consistent with data and text in the supporting documents and does not disclose the finer attributes of the Caltrans Southern Alignment. Consider these flaws: The DEIR engineering drawings clearly show the Existing Alignment has 50 percent more floodplain encroachment than the Southern Alignment. The southern alignment has less floodplain encroachment, fewer cultural and habitat issues, and is clearly a better choice. The costs for the southern... Full story

  • Re: 'Healthcare district issues thumbs down on Liberty Quarry project' [Letter, Village News, 10/28/10]

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

I read that the Fallbrook Healthcare District voted unanimously to send a letter to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in opposition to Granite Construction’s proposed Liberty Quarry project. I want to applaud and commend the district for its intelligent and wise decision because people’s health far outweighs the profits a mega corporation will make out of a giant mining operation. We cannot allow this potentially hazardous pit mine to be permitted, because the sad fact is we will only know the truly adverse aff...

  • Dietary acid haunts candy and drinks

    Updated Oct 28, 2010

Halloween has long been ruled by the popular sugar goblin in all its many forms. Although a contributor to obesity and diabetes, sugar is not the only hazard encountered in trick or treat bags. If sugar is the treat, than acid is the trick as the development of sour acid candies has led to the erosion of candy-lovers’ tooth enamel for several years now. While many people are aware of the dental dangers of eating candy, they don’t realize that those destructive acids lurk in ma...

They did a fine job,” said Fallbrook head coach Troy Hamlin. “All in all it was a very successful day for us.” It was also a successful day for Vista freshman Ashley Cope, who won the Stanford Invitational’s Division I race in her previous meet....
