  • There's more to the story

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

I read the article in the October 16 Village News about the Killer Pizza from Mars remake with interest. Here is the rest of the story that they didn’t mention: their kind generosity. Their Oceanside location has been providing pizza for our group meeting in Carlsbad every month for the last three and a half years (that I know of and probably longer). They provide enough to feed our 20 to 25 members free of charge every month. We are the nonprofit Trauma Intervention Program (TIP). We go out on 9-1-1 calls to assist and c...

  • I support Keith Battle

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

I support Keith Battle as the incumbent on the Fallbrook Public Utilities District (FPUD) seat two. Water is crucial, and Keith has served Fallbrook well on a board that has kept our water/sewer resources strong. While Village News doesn’t have the resources to investigate every claim made by challengers on the opinion page, it is evident that the board has been able to avert many of the problems and controversies that other districts have suffered, while providing sound management, forward thinking, and good r...

  • Retired Teachers' Week Nov. 2-8

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

The level of confusion and misunderstanding in the debate over public pensions is very disturbing. Many people seem to think that teachers, police, firefighters and other public workers receive their pensions as a “free” benefit. The fact of the matter is that all public workers pay into their retirement. Teachers pay approximately eight percent of their salary, much higher than the rate private sector workers pay for Social Security. Since teachers aren’t eligible for Social Security, their CalSTRS pension is their only guar... Full story

  • Selective leaking is self-serving

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

I find it reprehensible that in his letter of October 16 Director Griffiths chose to quote selectively from a document which was not a matter of public record. It was a self-serving act and a betrayal of the legitimate expectations of confidentiality of the board and general manager. The document itself says unequivocally that he must pay the money back. That is not the focus of my comments here. Before he included segments of that document in his letter, it was not public; his disclosure made it so and opened it up to a...

  • RE: 'Director Griffiths must go' [Letter, Village News, 10/9/08]

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

In a recent letter, Helene Brazier leveled a charge that Director Jack Griffiths of the Rainbow Water District was not fit to continue as a director. Director Griffiths has exposed unneeded projects such as Helene Brazier’s vote to spend $750,000 of ratepayer’s money on a very small pump station called Vallecitos. Griffiths did not support the motion. He showed that only a few thousand dollars in maintenance was all that was needed to renew the station. This has been done and the pump station is now back online. Director Grif...

  • Medicare structured for profiteering, not health

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

I just spoke with my sister in Natchez, MS, who was rushed from her small business to the hospital five miles away. The cost for that ambulance trip was $1,522. The month before I went to a North County hospital, but fortunately I drove myself. I don’t know how much money I saved Medicare by driving myself, but I have received other statements totaling $94,774 to have my gallbladder removed. I find these costs astronomically outrageous. It is no wonder Medicare is going broke. Our medical scheme was designed to soak the t... Full story

  • Vote 'no' on Prop. 2

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

Reducing our carbon footprint has become an important collective goal and a personal commitment. One popular strategy is purchasing locally produced farm products. When we “buy local” we avoid the need for transporting tons of products thousands of miles by truck, ship or plane. In San Diego, we are lucky to have access to locally produced fruits, vegetables, nursery products and eggs. Now, Proposition 2 threatens to take some of the choice away from us. The economic reality is that a vote for Proposition 2 is a vote to put...

  • The most important job in the world

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

I need to hire someone for the most important job in the world: to be in charge of the greatest country in the world. I am going to look at qualifications, experience, education and track record. If they are willing to die for this country, that’s an honorable plus. I don’t care which party, religion, race or gender they are and I don’t place much value on who they have hung around with, though having a mentor/priest for guidance for 20-some years is a plus, be it small. The political finger-pointing is boring me. These candi...

  • Dooley, Heyneman for FCPG

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

Jean Dooley and Jackie Heyneman will get a dot on the ballot for the Fallbrook Community Planning Group (FCPG) from me on November 4. I am voting for them for three reasons: they have the knowledge, skills and attitude to provide the leadership on critical planning issues; they have years of extensive boots-on-the-ground experience on a myriad of projects and programs; and they love Fallbrook. They will be analytic and strategic in their thinking. As a first line of defense in preserving our quality of life, the FCPG has an...

  • Vote Gebhart for Planning Group

    Updated Oct 30, 2008

She has spent many hours and personal donations to support the Santa Margarita Trails. She is dedicated to preserving our great country community. We have lived in Fallbrook since 1979 and Donna works to keep our community the great place... Full story
