  • FPUD provided with temporary chlorination facility

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

The burning of Red Mountain during the Fallbrook (Rice) Fire cost the Fallbrook Public Utility District the chlorination facility for FPUD’s Red Mountain Reservoir, but FPUD is currently using a temporary portable facility provided by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The acquisition of the temporary chlorination facility was a combined effort of FPUD, the Metropolitan Water District, and the San Diego County Water Authority. “The fire went over the Red Mountain Reservoir. They lost their chlorine fac... Full story

  • Typo threatens I-15 Corridor Design Review Board

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

The I-15 Corridor Design Review Board, which has been a discussion topic for abolition but which has strong support for retention by many residents of the covered communities, may be eliminated due to a typographical error. Members of the Bonsall Sponsor Group and Bonsall Design Review Board have requested that the county combine those two groups, and when the County of San Diego’s Administrative Code section was revised to eliminate references to the Bonsall Design Review Board the I-15 Corridor Design Review Board was a... Full story

  • Jennifer Youngren: in real estate, staging and pricing is the key

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Jennifer Youngren, a distinguished Realtor for Coldwell Banker Landmark Group, has received several awards throughout her career. These accolades include the Sterling Society Award, Diamond Society Award, two Outstanding Performance Awards and a Customer Service Award. The real estate market lull has not slowed Youngren down much, because her method in helping a seller succeed in a transaction is based on a dual methodology: set the stage to “wow” potential buyers and be highly competitive with the listing price. Acc... Full story

  • Educational task force focuses on continued diligence

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

On October 12, superintendents and school board trustees representing 42 school districts in San Diego County met to hear a report from their Achievement Gap Task Force. Comprised of 23 educators, which include elementary and high school superintendents, college deans and teacher union members, the group monitors student achievement in county schools and makes recommendations for improvement. The group meets annually to reveal the progress of county schools as they relate to state benchmarks and federal goals for No Child...

  • 4H is off and running

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Fallbrook 4H has just started a new year and projects began meeting in October. New members signed up at the October 2 meeting and heard Matt Rahn speak about the Santa Margarita Preserve. Most audience members were unaware of the preserve but interested to hear about the research going on there. The Beginning 4H group met and painted mini pumpkins as a sample craft project, then on October 16 joined the floriculture group for a tour of Olive Hill Nursery. Cooking, Small Animals, Crafts and Quilting projects hope to start...

  • Warriors defeated by Panthers

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

On October 19, the Fallbrook Warriors traveled to Vista attempting to receive their first league win. After a tough game against Rancho Buena Vista, the Warriors looked to bounce back and defeat the Panthers, who are 4-2. Even though Fallbrook gave the Panthers a fight, Vista defeated Fallbrook by a score of 21-7. The first quarter looked promising for the Warriors as the Fallbrook defense forced two fumbles, which were recovered by Lyle Ducker and Joe Burke. However, the Fallbrook offense never ignited in the game and did... Full story

  • Tomlinson sets American age-group record in 44-lb throw - Wins ultraweight pentathlon, weight and superweight throw

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Fallbrook’s Doug Tomlinson set an American age group record in the 44-pound weight throw during the ultraweight pentathlon October 6 in Seattle. Tomlinson also won the ultraweight pentathlon, finishing first in all five events, and he also won the 16-pound weight throw and the 35-pound superweight throw. “I did pretty good there,” Tomlinson said. “Once I won the first two [the 16-pound and 35-pound throws], I knew I’d won the other one,” Tomlinson said. “The surprise was setting the American record.” Tomlinson, who...

  • River's Prayer wins Rancho Bernardo Handicap, sets track record

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

River’s Prayer, a four-year-old filly stabled at the San Luis Rey Downs Thoroughbred Training Center and bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, won the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club August 17. River’s Prayer, who was ridden by jockey Clinton Potts, finished half a length in front of second-place Strong Faith in the 6 1/2-furlong stakes race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. She had a winning time of 1:17:85, which set a record for all horses at that distance on Del Mar’s new P...

  • Mericle honored as Coach of Year for gymnastics

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Although Fallbrook High School gymnastics coach Debbie Mericle was not present at the CIF Board of Managers meeting October 16 in El Cajon, she was honored in absentia as the 2006-07 CIF San Diego Section gymnastics coach of the year. “It is a great honor,” Mericle said. “The people I went up against are awesome people.” The recipients of the award were selected by the other coaches in their sport. “It’s a great honor ’cause the coaches do it,” said CIF commissioner Dennis Ackerman. The awards are not necessarily giv... Full story

  • Warrior sticksters 2-2-1 at Serra Tournament

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Fallbrook High School’s field hockey team won two games, lost two games, and tied one match at the Serra Tournament played September 29 and October 13. “We did okay,” said Fallbrook coach Kathy Waite. The Warriors began the tournament with three games on September 29. Fallbrook tied Mira Mesa, 1-1, and defeated Helix by a 1-0 score before losing to Westview by a 2-1 margin. “We did a very good job,” Waite said. The two October 13 games did not have a format for ties, and in the first game the Warriors lost to Torrey Pi...

  • CIF resumes practice, games

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

The CIF San Diego Section, the governing body of high school athletics in San Diego and Imperial Counties, resumed practices and games as of October 30. The CIF made the announcement October 26 but noted that games the week of October 30 through November 3 would be contingent upon adequate air quality and willingness of the school districts whose teams were scheduled to participate. The games between October 22 and October 27 were cancelled. “Nothing from the 22nd through last Saturday will be made up,” said CIF commissioner...

  • In need of normalcy

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Why is it that when our ordinary lives are turned upside down, we hunger for the same ol’ life that once was? I just made it home from the evacuation we all experienced. I carted a motion-sick cat all the way from Arizona; I am running a huge fever; and I just desire so much for things to be as they were. But nothing remains the same. It was an odd and surreal sight to drive in from the 15 to see our lovely hills, beautiful homes, and lush green valleys destroyed in such a fierce way. I prayed dreading the news about the i...

  • What are you grateful for?

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

As we begin the month of November, a most appropriate question is: What are you grateful for? I, for one, am grateful for the words of Jesus in Luke 6:35. In this verse He speaks of God and says: “He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked!” I am grateful for these words, because if anyone has been ungrateful, it is me. The list of things I have complained about or taken for granted is pretty much an endless list. It includes, but is not limited to: my air conditioned car; my lovely home; my wonderful wife; this great nation... Full story

  • Evacuating our local hospital, skilled nursing facility

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Fallbrook Hospital and its skilled nursing facility (SNF) are arguably two of the community’s most vital assets. When winds pushed the ferocity of the Fallbrook (Rice Canyon) Fire onto the west side of I-15, hospital administrators made the unprecedented decision to evacuate its patients and temporarily close the hospital and the SNF. Hospital physicians, nurses, medical technicians, maintenance and administrative staff practice annually for just such a situation. Each person has a role to play in securing the safety of h...

  • We can control growth

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Why approve new development during anticipated water shortages? I attended the Town Hall meeting October 17 and witnessed a big disconnect between plans for growth and water supply. Our Water Authority Chairwoman emphasized they were not in the land use business, saying their job is “to respond.” I interpret that to mean the county makes plans to cope with projected population growth 20 years out and the Water Authority accommodates with plans for water supply. On the surface this sounds okay, but things change – like prolo... Full story

  • Evacuees thank Albertsons, Major Market

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

A big thank you needs to go out to Albertsons and Major Market for helping my family and neighbors during our evacuation. We decided to camp in the Albertsons parking lot instead of waiting in the long line to Camp Pendleton. Since all the stores were closed in the parking lot, my husband and I decided to take a walk downtown to see what food was available. Major Market was handing out chickens and free water. 7-Eleven was the last gas station open with some food. The next day Albertsons manager Kim and helper Eddy opened the...

  • Thank you emergency workers

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

“Surreal” is the only way to describe the scene as we arrived home Friday after four days of evacuating to Orange County. And the only way to describe work of the firefighters, sheriffs, sheriff volunteers, the military, the utility workers and many more organizations and individuals is “spectacular.” I want to compliment these people for their dedication, skill and courage. From my front porch, which had escaped the fire by 50 yards, I saw 25 homes on Las Vistas Road, Toyon Heights Drive, Red Mountain and Megan’s Bluff sur...

  • An open letter to San Diego Board of Supervisors

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

It is now day four of the mandatory Fallbrook, CA evacuation and news organizations report that the Rice fire is “no longer considered a threat to the town.” However, the bulk of 45,000 residents remain displaced. No logical explanation has been given as to why they are being barred from their homes. Further, there is no clearly communicated plan as to when residents can return. When the mandatory evacuation of Fallbrook was issued, residents put their trust in officials and left their homes willingly. They left with the goo...

  • In support of lacrosse coaches

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

The article “Parents ask FUHSD board to remove coach” in the October 11 [Village News] was disturbing. My son has been on the lacrosse team for two years and I’m happy with the coaches and the program. My husband and I attended all the varsity games last year and I was impressed how the team improved. It went from one that struggled in passing and playing to a team that found a rhythm. There was bonding that reflected a positive environment. I never saw the coach act in an unprofessional manner. My son would come home some... Full story

  • Thank you to some angels

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

This is just a little letter of thanks to some of our heroes here on the home front. Many of the locals here in Fallbrook know my son Joel, a.k.a. “Speed Racer.” He is disabled with cerebral palsy and uses an electric chair to get around town. Joel leads a very active social life, with many family members and friends here in Fallbrook. Recently Joel was in need of a place to stay between caregivers, as he needs assistance with bathing, dressing and cooking. A group of Marines invited Joel to stay with them as we searched for... Full story

  • A friend whose heart flowed with creativity

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

I remember a politician back in 2000 who, when asked publicly who his favorite philosopher was, replied, “Jesus,” boasting he was “born again.” I learned long ago that those who thumb their lapels and display their religion with public puffery have generally found salvation in some external ideology and that those who quietly live their daily life with compassion and love find regeneration from within. There is a big difference, for only from this deep inner source can the fruitful waters gush forth to nourish the people and...

  • How do we rid lacrosse program of ugliness?

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

I was angered by the lack of editorial responsibility exercised in your article regarding Coach Schoffstall [Village News, October 11]. It tarnished the reputation of a teacher/coach without thought to the impact upon the Schoffstall family. Journalists have a responsibility to provide accurate and fair reporting. The author of this story made slanderous statements and made allegations not based on fact. The lacrosse program is in a crisis. Fault should be shared among parents and school officials. How do we rid the program...

  • Health problems are results of policies promoted

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

Concerns about Bush’s veto of the Democrat Congress’ proposal to more than double SCHIP funding is just one more disingenuous political ploy on the part of Democrats. The left portrays the veto as a lack of concern for the health of America’s children, knowing most Americans will react emotionally. Many don’t know this is a 10-year old program that, according to Wikipedia, has resulted in families canceling their private insurance to take advantage of the more generous benefits of the current SCHIP program. It hardly seems r...

  • Every life is precious

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

War is abhorrent to most everyone. Why is this? Is it because of the loss of life? Or is it because of a basic revulsion for conflict? Consider this: every life is precious to someone. Is it more grievous when a soldier dies than when someone is senselessly murdered or dies in an automobile accident caused by a drunken driver? There are approximately 12,000 deaths by murder in the US each year and about 10,000 deaths in automobile accidents attributable to drivers under the influence of alcohol. The combined total is about... Full story
