Dominick Grossi Jr. has lost a lot as a result of being the victim of four crimes in less than 90 days at his Fallbrook business, Dominick’s Italian Deli & Sandwiches, but one thing he hasn’t lost is his sense of humor. Grossi continues to greet his customers in his usual joking manner while receiving a bevy of advice on his misfortune. “I’ve been told I should put bars on my windows and doors, but I don’t want this to look like Los Angeles or Tijuana; I just want to run a little deli in this cute town,” Grossi said. “Plus... Kimberly Pridmore isn’t happy, as evidenced by the picket signs she and her husband, Charles, have carried on October 26 and 30 in front of her former place of employment, the Wayside Café on Main Avenue. Paul Kalajainen, owner of the café, isn’t happy either. He says he is disappointed that someone would do this to one of the landmark businesses in town. Pridmore claims she was fired from the restaurant, where she worked as a waitress, on March 27 after she complained to Kalajainen that certain cooks at the establishment wer... Full story

As a veteran teacher, I can see clearly how the Governor’s misguided Prop. 74 will make it harder to recruit and retain educators in our state. Think about it: California will need more than 100,000 new teachers over the next ten years, yet Prop. 74 will only drive away new teachers fed up with the idea of a probation period of five years instead of two. That’s five years of probation status in addition to five years of college, numerous state exams and extensive student teaching requirements. The best way to help new tea... Full story

Recently Shirley Hanner wrote a letter regarding the outdated garage sale signs that litter every open space in Fallbrook (“Outdated garage sales signs frustrate,” 10/6/05). I could not agree with her more; the people having the sale should remove these signs. Fallbrook is starting to look like a Third World banana republic or some former communist state with all the paper hanging, but what angers me more are the inconsiderate real estate agents and their signs. Real estate agents and their sign flunkies are the worst of all...
This November’s Special Election offers all local voters eight statewide propositions to vote on. Bonsall voters will be able to express their opinions on a $17 million bond for the Bonsall Union School District (BUSD) as those in Division Five of the Rainbow Municipal Water District (RMWD) will choose whether or not to recall their current representative, Robert Glick. If Glick is recalled, it is likely that Rua Petty, the only candidate listed for the position, will take Glick’s seat. Proposition 73 Waiting period and par... Full story
I’m puzzled! Proposition 75 requires that Union management get permission annually, from their workers, before using part of the Union dues collected to advance the election chances of politicians favorable to labor causes. Well, I’m not currently a Union member. However, when I was in a Union (Plumbers Local 8, Kansas City, MO) the Union leadership was required to get permission of the membership before they could fund political candidates. Has the national organization (AF of L/CIO) changed this policy since my time? The...
As a local teacher and longtime Fallbrook resident, I am alarmed by the Governor’s campaign for Proposition 76 on the Nov. 8 special election ballot. At a time when California already spends about $1,000 below the national average per pupil, Prop. 76 would cut school funding by over $4 billion every year, or about $600 per student. It will invalidate Prop. 98, the minimum school funding guarantee for public education. Without Prop. 98 our schools will have more overcrowded classrooms, teacher layoffs and fewer textbooks and c...
Teachers are often asked, “Why do you teach?” Most answers revolve around students and the ability to touch the future, such as “I do not tire of rediscovering the world through students’ eyes. The rewards of helping a child are priceless.” Another answer is “I have cherished the knowledge that I am able to influence the lives and minds of many young individuals. For a teacher’s work is never really complete but forever persists, together with the ideals and principles, in his/her students.” Still another answer is “As a...
Rainbow Municipal Water District needs a Board of Directors with a majority of vested residents planning to live out the remainder of their lives with civic activity within the Fallbrook/Bonsall area. Is it coincidence that both “Old Board” Director Clemens (Division 1) and recalled Director Cole (Division 4) have sold their homes and Director Bopf’s (Division 3) is now on the market? The same three defectors raised water rates unevenly onto Agriculture (for three of Bopf’s Ag-hating minority domestic customers) and stuck us...
