So often we hear negative news, it isn’t often that we hear about good things that touch our lives and our hearts deeply. A recent letter in the Village News about our brother, Roland Grote, was an unexpected surprise. It was genuinely thoughtful and expressed concern about his need for a reliable bike. His electric Cozy Bike, the “Red Lightning,” had been repaired too many times and ultimately it was a hopeless case. Without complaint, Roland switched back to his faithful black bicycle and continued to make his nightly trek...
The most recent letter from Mr. Campbell questioned why “the helicopter traffic has to plague Fallbrook residents.” It must be said that the helicopter does not plague all Fallbrook residents. There are many of us who are delighted by that traffic. I have lived in Fallbrook for only two years, so I am certainly not qualified to tell a resident of over 25 years that he should move. I wouldn’t tell him that no matter how long he or I have lived here. I can say, though, that I like the sound of the helicopters. They fly right...
I had concluded I would write no more letters to the editor (I am age 90) and then along came Jon Monday’s letter (The Village News, Oct. 31). It is a classic example of the convoluted thinking of liberals. To infer that the Democrats are more thrifty than Republicans is ludicrous in the extreme. He fails to mention that a substantial portion of the administrations of Republican presidents were with a Democratic majority in Congress and if Congress had not been so resistant to fiscal austerity the deficits would have been l... In Defense of the NSA, I am not worried about the NSA spying on my phone calls. And neither should any of the millions of citizens of the U.S., France, Spain, or elsewhere. It would be virtually impossible to do so, as well as being improper and unnecessary. I have no insider information about NSA’s activities. I base my conclusions on logic, and a bit of knowledge gleaned from public information about the agency. So here is my take on what they are doing. What the NSA does is called Traffic Analysis. The NSA uses c...
Identify theft is a real and dangerous threat to a person’s financial wellbeing. Many times, people’s identities are stolen when they dispose of old computers. Criminals can mine old hard drives for personal information such as bank accounts, credit card numbers, and social security numbers, even if the person thinks they have “deleted” all the information. The only way to ensure your identity is protected is to have your old computer properly and securely disposed of by a responsible recycler. Boy Scout Troop 739 has arr...
Although the county amended its Zoning Ordinance in 2008 to expand the areas allowed for a Certified Farmers’ Market in unincorporated San Diego County, an incident with the Farmers’ Market in Alpine indicated a Sheriff’s Department belief that a solicitor’s license is necessary for any vendor who is not authorized as a certified producer by the county’s agricultural commissioner. The licensing requirement is in the process of being reviewed by county staff and other stakehold... Full story

NORTH COUNTY – According to Dr. Laurainne Haenni, D.V.M., “When the weather starts to get cooler people may think they are through with fleas for the year but we often see pets with fleas during the holidays. They are a nuisance to pets and owners alike and now is the time to get rid of them.” Fleas are not killed by the cold unless there is a hard freeze, but not in mild winter climates. Also, while fleas might die in the cold outdoors, the heat inside homes will kee...
