Recently I went into Chase Bank [Fallbrook] to take care of a simple transaction. Before going, my daughter and I rolled $71 worth of coins. Along with the rolled coins, I had a small baggie with some loose coins – $4 worth of quarters and $4 worth of dimes. I told the teller I would like to exchange the coins for paper bills. Her response was, “I can’t take the loose coins.” My reply was there weren’t enough loose coins to roll. She still refused to exchange the small amount of loose coins. This employee told me she “didn...
I had a trip-fall accident entering the Bonsall ARCO gasoline station office on October 22. The staff’s response was so thoughtful and well executed that I wanted to compliment them publicly. I was approaching the station to pay my deposit. I had my wallet in my right hand and had glanced toward it when my left foot missed the second step and my head came crashing own on the concrete threshold. There was lots of blood. As I was raising my head, I heard a voice saying, “I have called 9-1-1 and the ambulance is on the way. What...
Our Fallbrook area is being threatened by the development of an enormous open pit mine at the I-15 entrance/exit to Rainbow. This mine site is a prized piece of California with many attributes we need to preserve: 1. It is the last remaining wildlife corridor between the Santa Ana and Palomar mountains. 2. It is in the Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. 3. The Santa Margarita River flowing through it is the last free-flowing river in Southern California, has the purest water around and is a water...
I’m cozy in my chair near the window, To indulge in a pleasurable ritual, As the sky awakens from its slumber Reminding me to greet the day. My husband peruses the morning paper, Ensconced in his favorite chair. I read the glaring headlines, “Obama signs hate crimes bill.” The four-letter word, ‘hate,’ emblazoned in red. I succumb to tears from remorse and sadness To recall people tormented through ignorance; Crucified souls that demand retribution. Others have paid a bigger price for the cause. Harvey Milk proclaime...
I just got the projected cost for 2010 of my medical insurance premiums for the one of us not under Medicare. These premiums have gone up 1000 percent since 1999, when we both were covered under employer-provided insurance. Co-pays have been added or increased and the annual deductible has gone up by 15 percent for 2010. This plan is based on a large base of healthy employees. If my spouse started today, she could not get coverage; she has a preexisting condition. And in the past when I have changed employers, my coverage... Full story
Finding an apartment in Fallbrook, if you are elderly and disabled with medical concerns, is nearly impossible. It’s either an apartment in an overpriced senior facility or a place in one of those 55-and-up complexes (also overpriced). I am 73 years old, disabled with lung disease and require constant care by my son, who gave up his career and devoted four years of his life to care for me. Most children today would just shove their parents into a nursing home and wait for their death. I congratulate my son for holding to f...
John S. Cardona wrote a vicious untruth in his letter of October 29, and in doing so demonstrated disrespect for your Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama. Cardona falsely attributed a direct quote to the president and then used it to vilify your Commander and questioned his even being an American. I know the quote is a lie, because something rather unusual happened when I went to advanced search on Google and used the “exact wording or phrase” option and typed in Cardona’s quote: “If you capture a terrorist, question him and...
