  • FUESD well ahead of nutrition mandates

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

If kids enrolled in the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District struggle with obesity, it’s not because of the food served in their cafeterias. Senate Bill 12, signed into law September 15, mandates nutrition guidelines that set new standards for foods low in fats, sugar and calories. Schools have until July 1, 2007, to comply. FUESD, however, has been in compliance for at least six years, says Sandi McGoldrick, Director of Child Nutrition Services for the district. Senate Bill 12 is among many which regulate nutrition i...

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

Thank goodness for the generous people and organizations in Fallbrook who respond with help to disasters that occur throughout the nation — such as Hurricane Katrina. Don Luallin, director of the Fallbrook Food Pantry, agrees that Fallbrook residents must be commended on their giving, but locally, Luallin is struggling to keep the shelves of the local food pantry stocked as the holidays approach. “It has been particularly hard lately because a lot of people and organizations in Fallbrook have responded with financial hel...

  • Local aviators inaugurate Hall of Fame

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

FALLBROOK — Two famous World War II aviators were inducted into the new Fallbrook Aviation Hall of Fame on Veteran’s Day, November 11. The pair, Fred Losch and Dick Rossi, are longtime Fallbrook residents. The new hall of fame is the work of the Friends of the Fallbrook Community Air Park (FFCAP). Doug Dwyer, vice-president of FFCAP, spearheaded the hall of fame, saying it is designed to highlight the surprisingly large number of aviation exploits of Fallbrook residents. Certainly, the first two inductees bear impressive avia...

  • Food for thought, politically speaking

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

With the special November election slowly fading into the sunset and the holidays in sight, planning for family gatherings, turkey dinners, decorating and shopping is probably high on everybody’s lists of things to do. Why not? We deserve to relax and enjoy the good things in life after the barrage of political commercials, advertisements, phone calls and overflowing mailboxes. Thank you, Governor! BUT WAIT… What is that on the horizon? Just when we thought we could turn the TV back on, read the paper, hang up the phone and...

  • Veteran's Day was rewarding

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

The Post Commander, officers and members of Charles E. Swisher, Post 1924, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fallbrook, wish to express sincere appreciation to all who participated in this year’s commemoration of Veteran’s Day on November 11. From the parade participants’ view, it was especially rewarding to see hundreds of residents of our great community lining Main Avenue, cheering and applauding as veterans of all branches of service, Marines from Camp Pendleton, the Fallbrook High School Marching Band, vintage and antique cars...

  • Keeping the Internet safe from the United Nations

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

On Wednesday, November 16, the historic “World Summit on the Information Society” convened in Tunisia. And while the name given to this United Nations’ sponsored meeting sounds sophisticated and futuristic, in reality the delegates in attendance will be debating a measure that could put the greatest technological development of recent decades at risk. On the summit’s agenda will be several different proposals to strip control of the World Wide Web from the United States and entrust it to the UN. History is the reason that th...

  • County Supervisors "Just Say No" to medicinal marijuana ID cards

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

SAN DIEGO — After a spirited debate, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors recently voted 3-2 to oppose a state mandate that the county set up a system to distribute identification cards to people who use medicinal marijuana. Federal law bans the cultivation, sale, possession and use of marijuana for any purpose; however, in California, Proposition 215 decriminalizes the use of marijuana and Senate Bill 420 forced counties to issue ID cards. Vice Chairman and Fifth District Supervisor Bill Horn said approving i... Full story

  • Have you had outgoing mail lost?

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

Is there anyone else who has had mail lost that has been deposited in the outside mailboxes in front of the Fallbrook post office? I have experienced three lost mailings, first in June, second in September and the last in October. All three envelopes contained checks. Fortunately none have been deposited, but account numbers were in the envelopes. I have talked to the postmaster at Fallbrook and was referred to the postal inspection group in San Diego. Their number is (619) 233-0610. They would very much like to hear if...

  • Rainbow firemen are "purrfect!"

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

Quite a while age, two Rainbow Volunteer Firemen came to our home to try and rescue a kitten that had climbed up into one of our very tall pine trees. These two firemen — Bruce (who I have since learned is the chief) and John — worked until dark to get the kitten to come down from the tree. In this season of Thanksgiving, we just wanted to publicly take time to give thanks to these wonderful firemen and all of those who serve our community and keep us all safe. May God bless them and all the firemen. Happy Tha...

  • Stupidity versus sanity

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

So Justice Clarence Thomas is not really Black and Maryland’s Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele is an Oreo because they do not follow the Negroes in heat from the lewd left? How can we take these people seriously? Why give the time and attention to the ranting of children? We are trying to build a society here. I am tired; are you? Are you tired of immature childlike adults whining about who represents Black people? Are you tired of poverty managers identifying characteristics based upon race? You should be; everyone should just a...

  • Thank you, Phyllis

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

Time and again, Phyllis Sweeney’s generosity has quietly assisted Fallbrook residents in many ways, often without recognition. My thanks to Phyllis, the Fire Safe Council and Lorene Bentley of Phyllis’ Encouragement Factor for graciously relocating the Council’s public forum on 11/21/05 in order to resolve a double-booking at a public venue. Because of their kindness, the Fallbrook Democratic Club will be able to hold its monthly meeting as originally scheduled on Monday, November 21, at 6 p.m. at the FPUD conference room....

  • How many will be maimed, killed?

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

Yesterday, at the Pala gaming facility, I saw dozens of young US Marines who were attending a once-a-year gala in their honor. These young men and women were resplendent in their dress uniforms covered with shiny medals. Some of the young men escorted pretty girls wearing evening dresses. Many of these young women were pregnant. I thought of last year’s gala and wondered how many of those present then were no longer alive. I wondered how many attending this gala would not be there next year — how many would be dead, how man... Full story

  • Parents need to parent, Metzger hasn't changed and Mondays' letter is misinformation

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

The letters section is getting quite interesting. Those in the November 17 issue are great! I take exception to the viewpoint of Michael Sanders. To suggest that getting drunk, etc. is having fun is very misguided and is the wrong message to be giving to young people. Children (a 14-year-old is still a child) need to be taught a sense of values and controlled when they are minors to avoid such self-destructive behavior. There are a great many wholesome activities that young people can happily participate in as they grow up. T... Full story

  • SBA reports on hurricane damage, rebuilding efforts

    Updated Nov 23, 2005

I recently visited hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. Words cannot describe the devastation that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita brought to the area, but let me try. Sixteen parishes (counties) surrounding New Orleans were devastated by the storm. Nearly 250,000 local residents were displaced from the area to locations throughout the United States. Over 200,000 homes were totally destroyed and another 45,000 experienced severe damage and now require extensive reconstruction. Of the 190,000 small businesses in Louisiana, about 81,000...
