Holiday decorations in retail stores are tempting homeowners earlier than ever this year; however, Fallbrook Garden Club members Margaret-Ann Ashton, Dee Brooks and long-time resident and garden expert Donna Schaffer say, “Before you buy, look around you!” In Fallbrook, fresh materials for holiday decorations grow year ’round. A wonderful benefit of Fallbrook’s mild climate is its prevailing green landscape, never-ending blush of flowers and trees laden with fruit. Blinking Star Tree This tree is perfect for a holiday centerpiece. The magic wand from Disneyland will blink either white or red/green. Select red, green or blue cardboard, depending on the wand color setting. Cut the cardboard tall enough to fit just under the points of the star and long enough, 16 inches or so, to make a cylinder. Glue edge with hot glue gun. Cut off excess board at bottom. The cardboard will support the wand. Wrap cylinder with material (I chose silver mesh) and glue edge. Surface of cylinder may be...
The concept plan for the San Luis Rey River Park was completed in early October. The concept plan is the master plan without the environmental documentation. It identifies the proposed boundaries of the park and evaluates the suitability of land for recreational facilities and open space preservation. The plan also identifies active recreation zones in select locations, although most of the park will be open space. The linear park is expected to total between 1,500 and 1,600 acres of land. The final work on the plan prior to...
Ginkgo biloba is an ancient tree with fossils dating back over 225 million years. It is a sacred tree in Asia and may owe its survival to centuries of cultivation by Buddhist priests on temple grounds. It probably no longer grows in a truly natural state but is now cultivated throughout the world for the renowned qualities of its genetic makeup. The Ginkgo was given the common name “Maidenhair Tree,” for its individual leaves are shaped and similar to the delicate Maidenhair fern. I personally prefer the “Dinosaur Tree,...
