  • A Village of ornaments - Local artist hand-paints Fallbrook landmarks on holiday ornaments

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

The holiday spirit has descended upon the Fallbrook community, and residents are looking for ways to share the cheer of the season with others. David Bean, a local artist who has lived in Fallbrook since 1999, has brought his own spin to the local holiday spirit by creating truly unique holiday ornaments, each capturing a well-known landmark in Fallbrook. Bean, 71, developed his artistic abilities at a young age by drawing and sketching while traveling for work. As a child,...

  • Council discusses 2011 growth and enhancements

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

The Fallbrook Revitalization Council invited a variety of representatives from the area’s non-profit organizations to discuss the growth and success desired for the upcoming 2011 year, and solicited ideas on how to promote events with the rest of the community, at its November 18 meeting. Gordon Tinker, a board member of the Fallbrook Healthcare District, stated that the district was within 30 to 60 days of finalizing a contract that would bring a dialysis center to Fallbrook. “Members of our community that require dialysis h...

  • FUHS students sew for a cause

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

Students in the Fallbrook Union High School fashion department have dedicated themselves to their own version of the 12 days of Christmas by utilizing that amount of time to sew soft, cozy hats for children being treated for cancer at Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Working on a dozen Tuesdays after school from 3 to 6 p.m., during open sewing sessions offered as part of the school’s Thrive program, the students have been busy working to meet a holiday deadline. “We w...

  • Re: 'FLC toughens up on unleashed dogs' [Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

As a longtime FLC volunteer and contributor, I’m disappointed at the tone and slant of this article, and especially at the use of such an obviously inflammatory picture of a vicious dog. I’ve walked my dogs every day, responsibly, at Los Jilgueros Preserve for almost 10 years now and have never seen this vicious dog there. Shame on you for negatively representing all dogs this way. Are there irresponsible dog owners out there? Yes. I support a crack down on irresponsible owners who can’t control their dogs. Dogs shoul...

  • Re: 'McPhee will get his chance' [11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

In response to Al Gebhart’s letter, I wish him well, but he seems quite upset at losing his FPUD seat. Gebhart lost previous FPUD elections for the same seat to retired FPUD Director Arne Gunnerson, but he did it then with more courtesy. I am the only California Civil Engineer with hands-on water utility experience to be sitting on FPUD’s Board of Directors. It has been reported, via GM Lewinger (Village News 10/7/10), that staff (a.k.a. management) will receive a 2.5 percent pay raise and hourly paid workers will not rec...

  • Re: 'McPhee will get his chance' [Letter, Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

“Take a look at Rainbow and its operation and water rates, and I think you will see we have a pretty good operation.” Well Al [Gebhart], there was a time when Rainbow probably deserved its reputation, but not anymore. As a public agency, we are probably more transparent in our interaction with our customers than most districts. A good example is our customer committees that advise the Rainbow board. Do you have anything remotely like that? Why don’t you explain your deal to sell water to JPower, Inc., which is outside your... Full story

  • Are we being set up for a hefty fine?

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

Rainbow Municipal Water District is building a replacement sewage water pumping station (against my vote), known as Lift Station No. 2 at the cost of about $1.5 million. Now the following extracts from their own documents should be considered for coping with a possible sewage spill and avoiding the subsequent fine under the present regulatory enforcement: Document: “Lift Station 2 Replacement,” “Environment” “Even with a timely response there is a minimum four hour timeframe between failure and diverting upstream flow into... Full story

  • Re: 'FLC toughens up on unleashed dogs' [Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

See the posed “trained attack dog” photo on the story of local dog owners who walk their dogs off leash at Los Jilgueros? I was there at the time when the professional trainer arrived for his photo shoot at the preserve. I see now why he was there. All who enjoy the land conservancy with man’s best friend know this is a distorted picture. Let us talk about solutions, not discord. Most other surrounding areas have allocated off leash hours for this large group with an obvious need. With all the land in Fallbrook, none has b...

  • New library improves our town's image

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

The new library is a class act. No, it doesn’t fit the ‘Friendly Village’ normal architectural mode, but we needed to add some new ideas to our funky little image, and this building certainly improved that. That being said, I hope that the people in charge of the ‘green’ roof are planning to put a small barrier between the sidewalk and the roofline. It’s way too close and inviting for a certain segment of our population to climb on. Not only will they probably maliciously harm or destroy the plants, but it’s an open invitati...

  • Bring jobs back to Americans

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

I have an idea that will bring back hundreds of thousands of jobs to American workers. My idea is to give a tax break to all businesses and corporations who willingly use real human Americans (not outsourced people in India) to do their genuine customer service, rather than using annoying, often infuriating computers that are never helpful, but do succeed in driving us to nervous breakdowns. If a tax break will not do it, then make outsourcing and replacing people with computers illegal. Hundreds of thousands of people would...

  • I will be making a donation with these funds

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

At the first of 2009, I wrote to try and find the Torres Family. A gift of cookies and a card for Lizbeth, with money enclosed, arrived at my door just before Christmas 2009. It was from the Francis Family. It has been a whole year with no response; the money never claimed. I will make a donation in the name of the Torres Family to the Fallbrook Land Conservancy. Jackie Heyneman...

  • Open Letter to Maggie Rogan, real estate broker

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

Dear Maggie, We can’t thank you enough for your help selling our home. As you know, we were very sad to have to make that decision. You advised us very well. You gave us an honest appraisal of our home, you showed us the comps, and we took your professional advice for the listing price. You had a great marketing plan – the photographer took great photos of our property and you put together a beautiful flyer and video for the Internet. Considering the market, our house sold quite quickly. You were also so patient in t...

  • Re: 'Jon Monday – where are you?' [Letter, Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

Regarding my “Incredible Shrinking Republican Party” letter from a year and a half ago, it’s still true: both in terms of traditional moderate Republicans getting out and being taken over by Tea Party types, who could have some influence on American politics, if they nominate grown-ups, instead of jokes like Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell. The trouble with both parties is that they go to Washington and immediately become corrupt. Even Rand Paul, whose father I sincerely admire, has said since being elected he’ll,...

  • Re: 'Friendly Village needs more friends' [Letter, Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

I could not agree more with the recent letter, “Friendly Village Needs More Friends.” Despite the lame excuse of the economy, there is a huge element of Fallbrook residents who are retired, have a constant income, and could come out of their stay-at-home lifestyle and support small business owners in Fallbrook. Having lunch once a week, while checking out the shops, or reserving a monthly special dinner night would help tremendously. More likely than not, our business people live here for the very same reasons that you and...

  • Gaughen named Pala Tribe's Environmental Director

    Updated Nov 25, 2010

PALA – The Pala Band of Mission Indians recently announced that Shasta Gaughen, the current Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for Pala, has been selected to be the Tribe’s Environmental Director. “The issues the Pala EPA tackles are a passion of mine, particularly our battle to save Gregory Canyon and stop a landfill from being built in a sacred location,” said Gaughen. “I’m very excited to continue my work for the Tribe in this new position.” Gaughen has worked with... Full story
