  • Woodsman, spare that tree!

    Updated Dec 6, 2007

FALLBROOK — Local organization Save Our Forest has an urgent message for area residents with trees that were damaged by the recent wildfire: No matter how burned they look, don’t cut them down or severely cut them back. Fallbrook is known for its ancient oaks and sycamores. After wildfires, they can appear to be scorched beyond saving, but their natural defense systems will usually bring them back. When a fire occurs during a dormant period for the trees – fall and winter – signs of recovery could be months away, in the spr...

  • Happy garden holidays to one and all!

    Updated Dec 6, 2007

I cannot begin to tell you what a joyous pleasure it has been to write this garden article every other week this year. I am in awe of the magic of emerging seeds and enchanted by the early morning harvests when the beads of dew form on the squeaky cabbages reflecting the light of the world. We are going to take a break over the holidays and resume the articles in late January. We are not going to repeat this year’s information; instead, we are publishing the entire set of garden articles in a small book, called “Organic Garde...

  • Shedding light on the bulb decision

    Updated Dec 6, 2007

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have been on the market for several years now. They use dramatically less energy to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb – 15 watts/hour for the light of a 60-watt bulb; 23 watts for the light of a 100-watt bulb – and save 2,000 times their weight in greenhouse gases over the life of the bulb. CFLs reduce your electric bill, your carbon footprint, and your out-of-pocket expenses, because they last three to five times longer than incandescent bulbs. Yet they still haven’t ca... Full story

Jeffries’ staff is working on determining the exact path the original 395 ran, which includes areas of Fallbrook, Temecula and Murrieta. In years past, Highway 395 was the major thoroughfare that residents relied on to travel from the San Diego area to points north. It was replaced in more modern times with Interstate 15. If the legislative goal is achieved, it wou...
