Last Saturday, the San Diego Section all headed to the Fallbrook High School to compete at the San Diego Section Field Day. Field days are competitions for each judging team, including specialty animal, farm records, small engines, light horse, livestock, farm power, nursery/landscape, floriculture, BIG and vegetable. Cockroaches! Eating bugs! What a “wild” week at La Paloma! Students kicked off the chilly week after our Thanksgiving break with a visit by the San Diego Zoo’s Dr. Zoolittle and his animal friends. Harriet Holmes, a Pearl Harbor survivor, is welcomed to Live Oak Elementary School on December 1 by Principal Tom Rhine. Holmes served as a nurse at Tripler Army Medical Hospital during the bombing. The school honored several survivors of Pearl Harbor with a special ceremony. Bill Greenhouse was assigned to the Marine Airbase at Ewa, HI, during the Pearl Harbor attack. The 35 participants in Zion Lutheran School’s recent trip to China are all in different stages of recovering from jetlag. They would all agree that a disrupted sleep pattern is a small price to pay for the incredible memories created in their 12-day biking trip to rural southern China. FALLBROOK — William H. Frazier School celebrated Children’s Book Week (November 12-18) by having a book giveaway to promote book ownership, fun literacy-related activities and family involvement. All of the students were able to rotate into the library, where they picked out a free book of their choice. The books were purchased with bonus points collected over the years. The California State Gymnastics Championships, hosted by Poway Gymnastics, were held in San Diego November 18 and 19. Hundreds of girls from all over the state of California participated. Local Fallbrook resident Kalani Aguigui, 11, placed fourth all-around. Kalani competed on all four events: vault, bars, beam and floor. Her total all-around score for the entire competition was 37.35; she was just five-tenths of a point away from placing third. The California High School Rodeo Association held an interdistrict rodeo November 11-12 in Paso Robles, and Fallbrook High School junior Kerry Popko won the first Pole Bending go-round not only among the CHSRA District 8 riders but also for all 128 riders from the various districts. “This weekend I wanted to get two clean runs and finish first in my district, but I wasn’t expecting to do that good,” Popko said. In 2000 Ryan Plackemeier was an intern for the Fallbrook/Bonsall Village News as well as a member of Fallbrook High School’s football team. On September 8, 2000, Fallbrook traveled to Mater Dei for a match against that Orange County school. Plackemeier played in the game and also wrote the story about the Warriors’ loss to Mater Dei.
