When the Fallbrook Union High School District Board of Trustees heard numerous complaints about Board Bylaw 9250 (extended benefit for retiring trustees) at their board meeting of November 27, one was from Fallbrook Union Elementary School District Trustee Maurice Bernier – the same individual who seconded the motion to pass the bylaw when he was seated on the high school board in 1995. A review of the minutes of the May 9, 1995, meeting show that Trustee Paul Finot (seated from 1992 to 1996) made the motion and, following B...

Members of the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club always gain the admiration of the crowd for their eye-catching classic cars. The Friendly Village crowd was filled with fun-loving spectators. These girls kept their enthu...

When I attended the last meeting of the Fallbrook High School board, I was very disappointed to see the conduct of the wife of a person recently elected to the board – a person that I voted for. When a member of the public was given her opportunity to address the board, I witnessed this woman verbally ridiculing her and making disrespectful gestures. Obviously she didn’t agree with what the woman was saying, but she did not even afford her the basic courtesy one expects from a responsible, mature adult. I asked people aro... Full story
Okay, ladies, I have held my tongue long enough! In July my partner (Alyssa Smith) and I purchased Slender Lady in town and I really thought that I would see many of my Fallbrook High classmates (’73) at our gym. Where are all of you? Are you still fit and fabulous? I know how hard it is to maintain a healthy weight now that I am over 50. It’s not fair that we have to eat less and exercise more. How many of you woke up one morning and realized that, while you were asleep, someone or something had stolen your body and replaced...
The election is over and now we will see if the Democrats can govern as well as they criticize. If the liberals such as Speaker Pelosi, Senator Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean control the agenda, we have reason to be concerned. However, the fact that Rep. Hoyer was elected majority leader is reason to be optimistic. Change occurs slowly. What we need to be concerned about is that the Democrats will pander to labor unions and significantly damage free trade programs. While there is constant talk about losing jobs to other...
Now that the election is over and I have celebrated Thanksgiving with my family, I want to express one more thanks: a very heartfelt, sincere thanks to those who supported me, voted for me and placed their trust in me. Although we did not prevail in the campaign for the 66th District Assembly seat, I truly enjoyed meeting the voters and hearing their concerns. That’s why, even though this election is over, we must continue to insist that our elected officials represent all of us, not just those who contributed to their c...
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rhonda Reinke for saving my life. How, you may ask? Thursday evening at 7:50 p.m. I was stopped at the corner going west at Alvarado and Main with a red light. I was admiring the beautiful lights downtown when the light turned green. I slowly made my way across the intersection while admiring the lights when a woman in a faded burgundy van plowed through the intersection going south on Main, completely ignoring the fact she had a red light. She never even slowed down. Had I not...
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Fallbrook, wouldn’t you say? The lights in the town square, the decorated Christmas trees in front of the Art Center, smiles on the faces of people you meet. And, it’s a very busy time at the Fallbrook Food Pantry! Clients are beginning to think about how they will provide Christmas cheer for their families. That Christmas joy can turn to worry when the total income to provide for your family is at or below the national poverty level. That’s why we invite YOU to lend a helping...
What if the headline read “Fallbrook celebrates the New School’s Achievements” instead of “DPLU threatens charter school”? Boy, wouldn’t that be something to be proud of. These are, after all, Fallbrook students we’re talking about. What, as a community, will we tell the children we did to protect their rights regarding their educational opportunities? If you are part of the Fallbrook community I urge you to step forward on behalf of the children and of the future of this excellent school. Regardless of where your children... Full story
The Iraq war was supposed to be about WMDs. The longstanding joke in Washington was that “we knew he had weapons of mass destruction, because we still have the receipts.” But, the UN weapons inspectors told us before the invasion that there were no WMDs; the Bush Administration chose to ignore them. The State Department prepared detailed post-invasion plans to avoid the very situation we now face; the Bush Administration chose to ignore them. By hyping the faulty pre-war intelligence, the Bush Administration overcame the goo...
Once again Fallbrook service groups are offering their hearts, and hands, to the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing efforts to aid those less fortunate during the holiday season. Manning the red pots, and ringing the bells each Friday, Saturday and Sunday between now and Christmas, at Albertsons and Major Market in Fallbrook are members of the Rotary Club of Fallbrook, Kiwanis of Fallbrook and Soroptimist International....
James Roth, chairman of Rotarians At Work Day (RAW), recently thanked the Bonsall Rotary for its participation in the dynamic project. RAW, which was started last year by District 5340 Governor Bob Watson, is under consideration to become an annual event. Last year Bonsall Rotary took on the renovation of the Fallbrook Food Pantry. With a great deal of planning and the help of local contractors and Fallbrook Rotary on April 29, the Food Pantry was repainted, cabinets for food distribution were made and installed and a...
The Fallbrook High School Marching Warriors competed at state championships on November 17 in Fresno. The band earned an impressive second place in music performance and ninth place on their total performance in the AA Division. (Divisions are assigned according to the number of members in each band.) Such ratings at a state competition would be phenomenal for any band but especially for the Marching Warriors. When the fall semester started in September they had no director, less than 30 members and a bleak outlook. It is... Full story
