  • 'Nativity Story' a must-see this Christmas

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

The new movie “The Nativity Story” is a must-see this Christmas season. Although it is faithful to the text of the Bible, it adds fresh insight into the emotions of Mary, Joseph and others in the story. If you stay to watch the credits until the very end, you find out that it was partly filmed in the village of Nazareth. The actors are ethnic – no blue-eyed Americans – so it’s very authentic. If you want to get into the true spirit of Christmas, go see “The Nativity Story.” And if you like the movie, you’ll love the book!... Full story

  • An angel in Fallbrook

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

There is another angel in Fallbrook and Peter is his name. Sunday, December 3, a car pulled alongside my car and the man informed me that my left back-up light was out, so I thanked him. The next day I happened upon Peter’s Auto Center at 215 South Main Avenue and I asked if someone could replace my back-up light. The man at the desk said yes, and he proceeded to open my trunk and unscrew things to get to the problem. He replaced my burned-out bulb and put everything back together, whereupon I asked, “How much do I owe you...

  • School district needs to plan ahead for insurance costs

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

With respect to Ms. Ramsey’s front-page article concerning the Fallbrook Union High School meeting last November 27, I would like to add a few comments. The cost of future insurance benefits for retired members is a major financial consideration for most school districts in California. Few schools have planned for the escalating costs, and only due to new state requirements must school districts begin to indicate the costs on a rational basis. These premium costs will be a major financial drain on the district if prudent s...

  • The electorate was bamboozled

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

The voting is over and the people have spoken. Proposition A, which asked consideration of sharing Miramar MCAS as a potential San Diego airport site, has gone down to defeat. I’m not sure there was any real understanding of the issue out there – and, in fact, the opposition couched their position in such a way that a ‘yes’ vote on the proposition was unpatriotic. This wasn’t true, of course, but the over-simplification was sufficient to win the day. The ironic thing, of course, is that no viable alternative has been offered.... Full story

  • 'Two Acres in Fallbrook' a magical show

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

“There is incredible magic all over the hills of Fallbrook,” said Greg Ballerino, my photographer neighbor, as he sat at his computer processing the 128 digital photos he had just made the last two hours while walking around his “two acres.” As he displayed his latest work on his specially calibrated monitor, I was awed at how he had caught the magic that I had seen but which had not registered in my mind correctly. It was a visit inside a magic kingdom. “These little kingdoms exist everywhere people allow God to perform h... Full story

  • RE: 'Hospital did not treat us with respect'

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

In response to Estella Garcia’s letter (the Village News, 11/16/06), we were glad to hear that Ms. Garcia’s son, Lucas, received care from his primary care provider on the day following his visit to the Fallbrook Emergency Department and is apparently doing well. We were disappointed to hear that Ms. Garcia was not satisfied with her experience in triage and would like to address the concerns that she expressed. Most patients who present at Fallbrook Hospital for care are seen by the on-duty physician within 30 to 40 min...

  • Disgruntled Republicans invited to Democratic Club meetings

    Updated Dec 15, 2006

As a former Republican voter (albeit a moderate), I share Robert F. Green’s sentiments in his December 1 letter, lamenting the loss of Republican real conservative “pay-as-you-go” (balanced budget), smaller yet effective government, rebuilding international respect by sensible (not arrogant) leadership, attention to domestic national security rather than nation building, attacking “real” challenges like global warming, dependency on foreign oil, sensible solutions to the social security funding, avoiding the train wreck of... Full story
