The recent letter to the editor from Jim Lowery contained enough factual errors that I felt compelled to respond. First, California is not “steadily losing residents”. According to a report released Dec. 7, 2011 by the California Dept. of Finance, “Overall, the state’s population grew by 0.7 percent to a total of 37.5 million people between July 2010 and July 2011.” Secondly, California’s home prices reflect the demand of the marketplace. The mantra of “location, location, location” refers to regions as well as neighborhood...
In past Letters to the Editor, I’ve read about Fallbrook businesses faltering due to the lack of customers, so I decided to patronize Fallbrook stores. Five of my friends and I met in front of the Caravan clothing store where we always get great service and friendly conversation. I am happy to report that the help in that store is still wonderful. The same for the Jewelry Connection, they were very courteous as were all of the shops on Main Street. This was not the case when I walked into the café near the Art Center and wa...
Marco LiMandri, a business district planner, recently spoke to Fallbrook’s Revitalization Council regarding development of Fallbrook’s business district. He described accomplishments in other districts and addressed signage, wider sidewalks, financing, and placing businesses on ground floors with residences above to enable a more walkable community. He said that planners must ask, “Is the timing right? Are the politics right? Are property owners willing to create a sustainable financial plan?” He also addressed partner...
There are many fine things about Fallbrook that go unseen. One of them is the spectacular Christmas light show put on by a talented man at his home on Reche Road, near Green Canyon. If you haven’t been, wait until the sun goes down, pack your friends and family in the car, tune your car radio to 90.5fm and go enjoy this man’s gift to you. He also accepts donations for the food pantry, so it is well worth the drive! I wish Mack and his family a very Merry Christmas! L. Hunt... Full story
People like letter writer Jim Lowery represent just what is wrong in California. Instead of adapting an attitude of what can I do to continue to make California the wonderful place it is... they are content with chronically complaining about the good old days and what they don’t have. History demonstrates that most people in the 1920s and 1930s, when times were much more difficult, rolled up their sleeves and made something happen in this country and for themselves. As a person who travels this country regularly and spends a...
To the people leaving this “old, rusty state” for such paradises as Texas, Idaho etc. – please be sure to tell the people there how bad it is here. When things turn around, they won’t waste their time moving to California. This message is from a California native born, schooled, worked, and retired for 82-plus years in this “beautiful” hell hole. Robert Scofield...
This Christmas you can adopt a family that is unable to provide gifts and a Christmas dinner for their family. The neat part is that you can actually give to these families and deliver straight to them at home if you so wish. This year there are hundreds of families in need right here in our own community. Please call Onelia at (760) 451-3296 or the Fallbrook Food Pantry at (760) 728-7608. You may also email [email protected] for more details. Leah Gerten...

Adjectives like “adventurous” and “provocative” alone cannot describe the cuisine at Pala Mesa Resort’s Aquaterra restaurant – a verb or two is indeed necessary. “Captivate” and “charm” will do just fine. After a taste of the new menu items, adding a few words to this list will be a cinch. The menu is never static, but changes seasonally. Executive Chef Sean Sullivan is always experimenting with new combinations; and those that work are unveiled as menu items. This... Full story
Sergeant Maj. Rick Cunningham handed the enlisted authority as 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. John Scott in a relief and appointment ceremony recently on the Camp Del Mar parade deck. Following Marine Corps tradition, the outgoing and incoming sergeants major passed the noncommissioned officer sword, symbolizing the change of responsibility between the two senior enlisted leaders. “I’m envious,” said Cunningham to Scott. “I’m handing you the keys to a Porsche. This is by far the best unit in t... Full story

The 2011 season ended for Fallbrook High School’s boys water polo team Nov. 9 when Rancho Bernardo took a 6-5 home victory at the Warriors’ expense in the first round of the CIF Division I playoffs. We felt like we outplayed them, but we just weren’t able to score,” said Fallbrook coach Bill Richardson. “We had lots of opportunities to win the game. We definitely outshot them, but we did not put our shots away.” The Warriors missed three penalty shots and converted only one of eight man-up situations after a Bronco play... Full story
