The students are excited; break is only two days away and the anticipation of progress reports coming home is over. The thought of no tests or running in PE for a whole two weeks seems almost unimaginable! Congratulations, Fallbrook High School, you have made it to winter break! This week, I would like to take the time to recognize a certain part of our staff that is oftentimes overlooked. I would like to make a tribute to our teachers at Fallbrook High School. The teachers here at our local high school work not just five...
Isn’t it great to be a kid, especially at Live Oak? Mrs. Greenleaf and Mrs. Geller are the Live Oak Kodaly teachers. This trimester students tried out for the choir they set up. Students had eight weeks with one practice a week to memorize and sing holiday songs perfectly. The choir’s first performance was at the Bob Burton Theater with the barbershop quartet. They performed for Live Oak students and parents, and this week they are taking a field trip to Pauma Valley to perform for the country club. Great job to those who... Full story

After the Bonsall Union School District (BUSD) Board of Trustees encouraged a room full of people to cure the budget problems of Bonsall Charter Academy for Learning (BCAL), the budget was balanced - based on the numbers provided to the Parent Advisory Board (PAB). Regardless of that, at their Monday night meeting, some board members projected opinions still in favor of revoking the school’s charter. PAB crafted the solution with a number of concerned parents, titled the Parent Advisory Counsel (PAC), after they learned of t... Full story
Fallbrook’s elementary school student population is racially diverse. Drive by Fallbrook Street School or Maie Ellis mid-afternoon any weekday and it’s obvious. While the community boasts few Asians and African Americans, the Latino population is exploding. At present 64 percent of enrollment is Latino and most Latino children entering kindergarten are not ready to be taught in English. For example, 272 students entering kindergarten in Fallbrook during the 2004-2005 school year were tested for English proficiency. Only 41...
Three things were different this time. First, it was the middle of the day. Second, he was fully awake. Third, it was real. In his previous dreams of meeting celebrities, it always ended the same way — with him waking up and finding no one there. When 14-year-old Fallbrook High School freshman Marky Delmege, who is afflicted with a rare genetic skin disorder called Epidermolysis Bullosa, came home from school on Monday, he got the surprise of his life when he was greeted by acclaimed drummer Jim Bogios, a member of the b...
A group calling themselves the Fallbrook Alliance for Arts Education met at Farmhouse Coffee last week to discuss the current arts situation in the Fallbrook Elementary School District. “We were separate voices that needed to form an alliance,” said Bob Freaney, a local education activist and a force in the Kodály Music program, which has been introduced at Fallbrook Street School and Live Oak School. Freany was joined by Donald Foulks and Dennis David, who has been instrumental in establishing a free violin program in the...

A $13,000 penalty was placed on the Rainbow Municipal Water District (RMWD) on December 6 by the California Department of Health Services (DHS) after the district failed to meet deadlines for ten of the short-term directives given in an August citation from DHS. A new citation was given along with the penalty and included 19 new directives with deadlines on or before January 31, 2006, and one with a February 28, 2006, deadline. The board discussed the matter at their December 7 meeting and created a plan in a special meeting... Full story

I have been a property owner and Rainbow customer for over 30 years. I am a retired CPA and have regularly attended Rainbow board meetings and participated in various district committees ever since I built my home in Fallbrook over 17 years ago. I am writing with reference to the full page advertisement on page A-7 of the 12/1/05 issue of the Village News. I am dismayed to see a turf war being ignited between agricultural and domestic Rainbow water users. None of us like to see high density development in our area,...
This country was not founded on Christian morals but human morals. In every major religion, the same ethics are taught: to respect your fellow man. Unfortunately, you are so caught up in defending Christmas that you completely forgot to embody the same meaning of Christmas that you are defending. When you can start viewing everyone as God’s children, then maybe you’ll take the true meaning of Christmas to heart and spread joy and love to all. Don’t be such a Scrooge, Mr. Ragland. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.... Full story
Mr. Lopez, your rebuttal letter to the editor was very distasteful, to say the least. You started out by making a good point and then trashed it by stating if Fallbrook turns into a barrio that would not be such a bad thing. Mr. Lopez, I beg to differ with you. As a resident of Fallbrook for over 25 years I refuse to allow this friendly village to turn into a barrio. How dare you suggest such a thing? We decent tax-paying citizens of Fallbrook have pride in our community and want to keep it clean and crime-free. We have... Full story

The Save Our Forest “branch” of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy enjoyed the Fallbrook Christmas parade very much. Although we were not out to win a prize for the best float or any other reward, we felt it important to be there to let the community know we are still around. The recognition we received with applause and “thumbs-up” from onlookers made the cold night ride well worth it. These groups of volunteers work quietly and unassumingly in various areas of support for our Treescape Project started some ten years ago. So...
I am writing regarding the plans for development at I-15 and SR-76. Three developers are pursuing housing and commercial use of three separate parcels. My comments on the subject are based on three different perspectives which illustrate the basis for my genuine concern regarding plans for developing these parcels. First, I have been a resident of Fallbrook since 1988. This is my home. Second, I am a community volunteer who has worked diligently to preserve and protect the rural nature of our community and the economic... Full story
I am a resident of Fallbrook and love my little town. I love to drive down Main Avenue and it is the first place I take visiting friends and relatives. The parade is looked forward to yearly by my oldest son, and now his young brother, but I am saddened by the way the streets look after the parade. This year, like all others, after the floats were gone and the people were packing up to go home they forgot something as important as their lawn chairs and blankets: trash. There was so much trash on the ground after, I was so... Full story
