  • Those who make a difference in our lives

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

In the tapestry of life you never know how important someone is going to be to you, or to those around you. Recently we have lost several people very dear to us. The last one was Bob Keck. He and Ann have been our across-the-street neighbors for 15 years. To know them you would think that they are some of the nicest people you’ve ever known, honest, kind and just “good people.” They, along with our other great neighbors, have lived near us enduring years of drum lessons, teenage pranks, new sound systems, various dogs and cat...

  • RE: 'I want gangsters stopped, don't you?'

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

“The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.” —Vincent Van Gogh I am a Fallbrook home and business owner and was inspired to comment after reading Sarah Bates’ recent “I want gangsters stopped, don’t you?” opinion letter. While I most certainly share similar concerns over gang presence in Fallbrook and I am in full agreement that greater funding needs to be provided to the Sheriff’s Department so that they can optimally a... Full story

  • Unions offer year-end bonus

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

Merry Christmas to the American workers. Have a productive new year. Chevrolet and Ford have announced layoffs and plant closings as a year-end bonus to their unions. The unions’ never-ending quest for benefits instead of product superiority has forced the investors to reduce productivity instead of producing a better product. When it becomes too expensive to have the best you are looking at trouble. High employee cost has forced the auto manufactures to seek savings by cannibalizing the product. In business, the product i...

  • Planning Group displayed courage

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

If you weren’t at the December 19 Fallbrook Planning Group meeting, you missed the courageous move by the board to reject Pardee Homes’ proposal to massively increase the density of the I-15/SR-76 corridor. Pardee’s outrageous plan for a “smart growth new community” of 1,100 homes, along with other planned developments in the same area, would change Fallbrook’s rural character forever and tax what is already an overburdened infrastructure. The community, members of Fair Plan and, most importantly, our board, were not fooled...

  • Congratulations

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

Congratulations, Bonsall parents and teachers. You’ve finally gotten what you’ve been moaning and groaning about since Bonsall Charter Academy for Learning was started. BCAL is now gone. I hope you had fun at your victory party. I heard Fidel and Saddam came and brought chips and dip. So my broken down home finally bit it and will be closing on January 6, 2006. I know this is a little late and the news is old, but last week, when I was trying to write this, I couldn’t seem to leave out the swear words. On Thursday, Novem...

  • The real question to ask the administration

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

I’ve waited in vain to hear a reporter ask the President or an administration official why they didn’t seek after-the-fact warrants for their domestic surveillance program, and I haven’t heard any answers. I can only guess what the real reason is: The information that would have had to be presented to the court to explain why they were seeking the warrant was obtained illegally… OR The basis of the request was clearly political in nature — as in tapping Seymour Hirsh’s phone, or John Kerry’s or the Quakers’… If... Full story

  • Mandate for morality

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

The crucial issues regarding a community’s demeanor are found in the practice of moral ethics. George Washington said, “A good moral character is the first essential. It is highly important not only to be learned but to be virtuous.” Strengthening character by ethics (practice of morality) remains to be one of America’s foremost social objectives. When we look at what it means to say, “Merry Christmas” shunning political politeness; or our sense of pride for America’s soldiers fighting for these inalienable rights. We ar...

  • Don't be such a Scrooge, Mr. Ragland

    Updated Dec 29, 2005

Here is some commentary on the origins of America from someone who was not only there but played a part in the foundation of this country. “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.” — Patrick Henry...
