As a Rainbow Municipal Water District ratepayer, I would like to say that board members (past and present) have demonstrated once again how irresponsible they are by putting this district in the position of being fined $13,000 for not adhering to Department of Health directives. There is no excuse for the flagrant disregard they show for the taxpayers’ money, let alone the endangerment of the public when it comes to the health standards of water. I think the best solution is for the state to step in and organize the c... Full story
Is RMWD a subsidiary of Dudek & Associates, Inc.? The State Department of Health Services (DHS) fined RMWD $13,000 for not “providing a reliable and adequate supply of pure, wholesome, healthful and potable water,” on August 5. DHS required RMWD to install relatively inexpensive flow meters and free chlorine residual analyzers to measure effective dose of free chlorine to inactivate viruses. RMWD procrastinated; our engineer and general manager are both employees of Dudek, subcontracted to RMWD. Correspondence and con...
The other day my husband, Frank, asked me, “What do you want for your birthday?” Ever since moving to Fallbrook I have wanted to take a small plane ride over our countryside. Frank contacted the Fallbrook Airpark and was given the name and phone number of Raster-Air. I called and talked to Van Raster. He is a pilot starting a new venture, giving rides around this area. To my surprise his introductory price was most reasonable, just $25 for 20 minutes. A date was set for December 7. It was a nice clear day and I found myself s...
When George W. Bush insisted that Iraqis, like Afghans before them, would go to the polls to elect their leaders, many of us were skeptical, and not unreasonably. After all, the term “Muslim democracy” has seemed an oxymoron. Of all the areas in the world, the Arab-Muslim Middle East has been the least democratic. A 1999-2000 survey by Freedom House — done, importantly, before September 11, 2001 — found that while 63 percent of nations are technically democracies, an astonishing zero of the 16 Arab countries in the Middle...
I have been watching British Parliamentary procedures on CNN and specifically “Question Time.” This is where the Prime Minister answers questions put to him by members of Parliament and from both sides of the aisle! This is democracy in action in its finest form. Questions are pointed, searching and knowledgeable and require an immediate response. The Prime Minister has to be in command of his facts and has to be “fast on his feet!” Compare and contrast that system with what passes for democracy in the USA. Our Preside...
This is in response to Jennifer Jeffries’ well written letter to the editor (12/15/05) requesting we join her in a quest to stop the efforts for an increase in dwelling density by Pardee on their development on the old HP property. She explained her background in the area; therefore, I wish to provide some background where I am coming from. I’ve been a resident in the county since 1938, born in Escondido. Part of my family has continuously resided in the county since 1866, only a short distance from here adjacent to Mt. Palom... Full story
While I cannot say I look forward to Christmas, I celebrate it, even if less enthusiastically as time passes. Perhaps it’s the “bah-humbug factor” that comes with fading eyesight and the other vicissitudes of what is, however — at least for now — still preferable to the alternative. For me, two Christmases contributed immeasurably to my bah-humbug factor, each vying for “worst” my two “First Christmases After.” The first worst Christmas of my life was my twenty-sixth. I had just returned from Indochina, where I served as...
The chill on December 13 didn’t deter a group of 50 seniors from Fallbrook who were pursuing some fun and hoping that “Lady Luck” would smile upon them. The seniors left the Fallbrook Senior Center at 9:00 a.m. bound for Harrah’s Rincon in a comfortable motor coach with large windows and cushy seats. Don Knudsen loves the bus ride and is happiest about “leaving the driving to someone else.” For only $6 each the group members were able to ride to and from the casino in style and also got a bit of entertainment thrown in f...
