In January, students at Fallbrook Street School will finally be able to use their new 1,920-square-foot library when it officially opens its doors. Although planned to welcome students at the beginning of the school year in September, a series of setbacks prevented the opening of the long-awaited facility. At double the size of the former library, the new building is located at the back of the Fallbrook Street School campus and is visible from neither Mission Road nor Fallbrook Street. It is separate from the new Childhood...
When the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District (FUESD) was asked Monday night to pass a resolution (#13-06/07) that would exempt The New School from zoning ordinances and building codes, Superintendent Janice Schultz announced she had spoken with Vallecitos Superintendent Dr. Paul Cartas, who said two acres of land were available for The New School in Rainbow and had found a type of septic tank system that would be acceptable for use on the property. Schultz said Cartas told her that he hadn’t yet had a chance to s... Full story

A San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote December 5 authorized the issuance of $4 million of Bonsall Union School District bonds. The November 2005 election which approved the issuance of $17 million in general obligation bonds allowed proceeds from the sale of the bonds to be used for the repair and rehabilitation of Bonsall’s public schools and for the construction and acquisition of new classrooms and school facilities. The first series of bonds for $8.92 million was issued in March 2006, and the $4 million a...

St. Peter’s Cub Scout Pack 738 recently spread Christmas cheer to residents of the Fallbrook Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility on Potter Street. First, all the boys decorated vases in their den meetings. Later, Pack 738 leaders Dominic and Cheryl Criscenti filled the vases with fresh flowers and greenery generously donated by Mellano & Co., a local grower. During the visit, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Cub Scouts distributed the vases of flowers to residents while they and their families sang Christmas carols throughout t...
FALLBROOK — The St. Peter’s Chapter of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) will spend an additional $28,000 to help people in need in the community during this Christmas season. First, SVDP responded to the Fallbrook Food Pantry’s extra needs. During the holiday season this local pantry is inundated with food requests. As a result, even though St. Peter’s has its own mercy food pantry and soup kitchen that feed hundreds of people each month, SVDP donated an extra $6,000 this month to help the Fallbrook Food Pantry with its expense...
Crime always rises during this time of year, so you must maximize your common sense and always be on your guard. Be it your home or your car, always keep your windows secured and your doors locked, and never open your door to a stranger. Be alert to suspicious people and/or sounds in your neighborhood and call the Sheriff’s Department at (760) 728-1113 to report suspicious activity. The main thing above all else is to pay attention to your surroundings. We all know not to leave purses, purchases, etc. in plain view inside o...

HR2672 and S853 have been in committee ever since they were introduced early in 2005. That has kept the rest of Congress in the dark about the enormity and nature of the President’s plans for the Security and Prosperity Partnership. US citizens must get these bills released from committee and brought to the floor for a vote. That is the only way to get the members of Congress who remain unaware of their content to read the bills, recognize what the President has been doing behind their backs and end the President’s unilateral...
In November I signed up to write a 50,000-word novel in honor of National Novel Writing Month. By November 30, still struggling at 32,000 words away, I fell short of the goal. As a short story writer, the objective proved to be more difficult than I realized; however, during the process I made a wonderful discovery. The story I chose to tell is about a young man who enlists in the Army. As the characters came alive in my mind and I began my research, I realized I didn’t know enough about the Army to write believable scenes. T...
My 5-year-old son, while at the store with his aunt, fell in love with a toy he saw in the supermarket. Unfortunately, the last toy was taken and she promised my son that Santa would bring it for him. Unexpectedly, the lady who checked out before them turned around, said, “Merry Christmas,” and handed my son the toy. This kind stranger’s actions have inspired us to “pay it forward” and it reminded us about the joy in giving. Lynda Ponce...
Only a few more days until Christmas! That is why we are working as hard as we can at the Fallbrook Food Pantry to find families and organizations that have not yet made a commitment to reach out to those in financial need at Christmas. Won’t you give us a call at (760) 728-7608 and agree to provide a family with a holiday meal and a wrapped gift for each person in the family? This year we had 378 families request help through the Adopt-a-Family program, an increase of 78 families over the number who requested help last y...
On Friday, December 8, Mary Fay Pendleton School held its third annual Daddy-Daughter Ball. Our cafeteria was turned into a winter wonderland to entertain our couples. Many of the dads were in their dress blues, while their “dates” wore holiday dresses. Thanks to Albertsons, Bonita Foods, El Toro Market, Major Market and Carl’s Jr. for the refreshments and Hines Nursery for the poinsettias, as well... Full story
