In response to Joyce Brazel’s letter: Joyce, we had three bookstores that I can remember, Village Books, Book Nook and the used bookstore under Phil Arnold’s office. They are all out of business; people wouldn’t support them. We had a music store next to the theater last year, ditto. I could name a long list of great businesses that have bit the dust, including Finnegan’s, Grandma’s, Fallbrook Grocery, Paradise Jewelers, Lace Apron, Scampi’s, The Westerner, Port’s, Nickerson’s Nursery, Lavender Dreams, Ericksons, At H...
I read Mr. Sommers’ article with great interest. I am a former Fallbrookian (17 years) and found a fair amount of truth in it. During our years in Fallbrook, we attempted to shop “downtown,” but much to our chagrin, the shops were closed on the weekends. I don’t recall a single weekend when the local shops were open. We shopped Fallbrook for a few items but always found the prices were inflated as one could travel to the WalMarts, K-Marts and beat the local prices. I attended a community roundtable years ago for this very sa...
We are more than an address; more than just a location on the map. We are proud residents living in a small, but challenged village. Fallbrook is where we choose to live and raise our families. Some of us have been here 50 years and others just moved here. Have you noticed there is actually a downtown Fallbrook? Some have not ventured there for years and may not know where Main and Alvarado are located. Unlike many surrounding towns, Fallbrook needs to be proud and supportive of what we have: a town square, art galleries,...
Decorating the Christmas tree always brings back memories. The children’s handmade ornaments are treasures carefully kept from year to year. This year an especially poignant unwrapping was a special ornaments sold by Marie Kinnaman, proprietor of the now closed At Home on Main Street. Each year Marie sought then sold items that had a special tree theme. One year it was two lovely ornaments with a tree and poem. Another year it was a beautiful pewter leaf with acorn, and then a unique pencil made from a small branch. Her p... Full story
My wife found a ring guard online she wanted for our anniversary. I took the picture to the Jewelry Connection and spoke with the owner, Jamie; showed him the picture and asked what he could do for me. Thinking he was going to show me something out of the display case, he suggested his jeweler (Rocky) cast the ring guard. To my surprise, Jamie quoted me the same price as the Internet ring guard despite Rocky having to ensure the engagement ring fit perfectly into it, and the diamonds being set in it were of much higher... I would like to thank the young couple in the black SUV (sport utility vehicle) that helped me rescue my bloodhound when he jumped out of the car window. Thank goodness we were on a little-used side road, Palomino. This nice young couple had treats and Solomon decided to get back in the car once they were offered. Thank you again. Karen Jefferies...
I just wanted to express my feelings in regards to Ms. Brazel’s comments. We had a bookstore and due to a lack of customers, it closed. But, we have a temporary library open on Main Street. And Fallbrook is going to have a wonderful new library very soon. See you there! We also had a music store that also closed due to a lack of customers. I was there all the time. I never saw anyone else. Hmm. The comment on the gypsy dress shop: you have obviously not been in there. I am a 54-year-old woman who buys most all my clothes - fr... Full story
Why is it that people move to a rural, quiet area and feel that it’s quite acceptable for their children to destroy that quiet with dirt bikes and ATC’s? In the 28 years that we have lived here, there has been wave after wave of children reaching the age that their parents apparently think is time for them to have some kind of noisy dirt vehicle to race around their property on. You should know that most of your neighbors do not appreciate this and can hardly wait for your children to grow up and move out on their own... som...
Now that I am exploring the culture of my mom’s Norwegian maternal grandparents, I am learning more about their native country’s traditions. I have discovered that it is a Norwegian custom to celebrate Christ’s birth on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day just like my mother’s family did when she was growing up. She carried on that tradition with our family and we went to my Italian grandmother’s house for pasta and meatballs the next day. Although my Norwegian grandma l...
