After 20 years, Sherry Teresa, founder of the Center for Natural Lands Management, retires. After helping to protect California’s resources for nearly twenty years, Sherry Teresa has retired from her position as founding executive director of the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM). • Environmental ruling causing hunger

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

It is doubtful that the authors of the Endangered Species Act envisioned their efforts would cause families to go hungry, but that is the result of environmental groups using the courts to block exports of water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, according to Mike Wade of the California Farm Water Coalition. “No one wants to destroy the environment but radical environmental groups are using the law to forge a wedge between the basic necessities of life and fish that are classified as threatened under the Endangered S... Full story

  • Senator comments on Democrats' multi-billion-dollar tax increase, Dems continue spending spree and raise gas, income, sales taxe

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

SACRAMENTO — On December 18, Democrats passed out of the legislature their $18 billion budget package to raise taxes without Republican support. Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta) issued the following statement regarding the illegitimate $9.3 billion tax increase: “The Democrats’ multi-billion-dollar tax increases on hardworking families will punish taxpayers and cause even more Californians to lose their jobs. “Raising the sales tax and Personal Income Taxes will not help stimulate the economy, but it will take mo... Full story

  • Fund set up for dairy farmer

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

I was saddened to read of the misdemeanor charged to Alicia Santacroce [Village News, 10/23/08] for illegally selling unpasteurized dairy products that she made from her pet goat’s milk. For the last 10 years I have enjoyed the wonderful goat milk, goat cheese and goat yogurt that Alicia lovingly prepared. As I’ve come to know her, she has become a true inspiration to me: she tends her garden, cares for her goats and chickens and lives in a manner I can only describe as harmonious with the nature. Recent studies in both the...

  • Thanks for the good news about Tiger

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

I am not a horse person by nature, having been astride the beast maybe three times in my 70 years; however, in the midst of all of the bad news that we read daily, it was like a breath of fresh air to read your story about Tiger, the sadly neglected horse which someone had the compassion to bring back to life. As a photographer myself, I am reminded of the old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Thanks for publishing this great story. Dennis Sullivan... Full story

  • SR76 Action Alert

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

There are a number of us who are proposing that CalTrans make the decision to go with the Southern Alignment for the new 76 Expressway. We have been told by Mark Phelan that we need to get our comments in before January 1 because, as he was quoted in the Village News (11/30/08), “There hasn’t been a large opposition to either of the plans, though most seem to prefer that CalTrans simply just widen the existing road.” The new CalTrans southern alignment proposal makes much more sense! There is dramatically less impact on th...

  • Questions on Orange Grove power plant project

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

I wish to acknowledge that I have been approved by the Energy Resources Conservation Commission of the State of California as an “Intervener” in the Orange Grove Power Plant Project. This is a special status giving me the power to intervene in the water and wastewater components of this project. It allows me to legally question aspects of this power plant project that I disagree with. My “Intervener” status appointment is based on my education and my wide variety of practical and management experience in water and wastewa...

  • Spiteful lessons turn into tragedy

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

A recent Toles cartoon shows a lifeboat being lowered alongside the sinking USS Economy. The lifeboat is filled with baldheaded business tycoons with G.W. Bush at the helm, announcing, “Brokers and bankers first!” Thousands stand on the deck, wringing their hands in despair. Unseen by everyone is the $1 trillion in loot the bankers and brokers have taken from the ship’s vaults. Now if we could see the other side of the ship, we would find thousands of ordinary American laborers boarding lifeboats. In one small boat the Big T...

  • If you want fair, go to the carnival

    Updated Dec 25, 2008

Being a medical transcriptionist is sort of like coming across the last chapter in a novel. Because I do reports for a large hospital in the Midwest, every day I listen to one story after another of lives gone awry. There was the teenage girl who lost an arm this July 4 when an errant firecracker exploded on her. The woman who thought she was turning into a flying insect and jumped off her roof. The woman who was beaten so badly by her ‘boyfriend’ he crushed one side of her skull. And who can forget the guy who went out on...
